Wouter Kiers: A Life on Stage
Tenor saxophonist Wouter Kiers is a well-known figure in the Dutch music scene. The stage is his home, including the stage of Paleis van de Weemoed, where we has performed many times before during the Red Light Jazz festival.
From Clarinet to Tenor Sax: A Rich Career
Wouter started playing the clarinet at the age of 9, but the tenor sax has been his instrument of choice since 1984. In 2000, Kiers toured Japan with Hans Dulfer. With fellow saxophonist Ruud de Vries, Wouter performed at the North Sea Jazz festival in 2002 with his then group ‘Kiers & de Vries’ and, in 2005, he performed with the Beatnach band from The Hague for 400,000 people at the Parkpop festival in The Hague. It was during this period that he created the Wouter Kiers Quartet.
Swinging Jazz in the Tradition of the Greats
With his quartet, Wouter plays well-known and lesser-known jazz tracks in the tradition of his saxophone heroes from the past such as Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins.
