DJ Miss Brown is one of the best all-round DJs in The Netherlands. With her cheerful appearance, broad knowledge of music and sense of audience, she is the best in taking any event to the "next level". She regularly performs on stage with live musicians such as a singer, percussionist, saxophonist and / or trumpet player. DJ Miss Brown started 19 years ago with old Soul &, Hip Hop / Jazz and R&B, later with Disco, Funk, Classics, 90s and House. She still plays every weekend as a resident DJ at many clubs, private parties and hotels in (a.o.) Amsterdam. She also produces her own funky tracks (soon to be released) under her full name ‘Raphaella Brown’ at IAMM entertainment. (Photo by: Charline Goud)

Emy Perez is a talented singer and songwriter with many songs on her name. Thanks to her stage presence, talent and powerful voice, she has just signed a contract with Cloud 9 Music. In short, she can now be admired in a small setting before she will only fill the large halls. Especially for the Red Light Jazz Festival at Bar TwentySeven, they are once again a duo and will give their all for a "Soulful & Sexy" night out.

This 21-piece big band fuses jazz and flamenco. Special guest: Carles Benavent, renowned bass guitarist from Paco de Lucia’s Sextet and Chick Corea’s Flamenco Heart.

The bass is a central theme for this year’s edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival, which originated in the Red Light District and will now collaborate with Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the BIMHUIS. Especially for this occasion the BvR Flamenco Big Band welcomes a remarkable guest: Spanish bass guitarist Carles Benavent. Together with legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía and band he developed a new flamenco language, which connected with prevalent jazz and fusion styles. During his fruitful career, Carles collaborated with, among others, Camarón de la Isla and Chick Corea.

The BvR Flamenco Big Band is a unique phenomenon, a 21-piece jazz ensemble conceived around a core of flamenco protagonists. The band was founded by Hispano-Dutch saxophonist Bernard van Rossum. He takes flamenco harmonies and rhythms to another level through colorful compositions and orchestrations. The band previously collaborated with harmonica virtuoso Antonio Serrano and vocalist David de Jacoba, who both come from Paco de Lucía’s band as well.

‘I heard some new territory that night. Modern, innovative, and highly skillful compositions that did not diminish in any way the soul of flamenco’ (Kenny Werner on BvR Flamenco Big Band).

Rayn steps in the future, leaving footsteps from his debut-album A creation from the soul. What a ride it was. Rayn is now working on a follow-up titled Back II Business which will be released world wide, digital & physical, in 2019. Back II Business will contain 10 tracks of 70’s/80’s groove and dance music. It’s a mixture of different soul and funk flavors melted together to form one solid foundation and story. The voice and the lyrics of Rayn are filled with emotion.

Rayn’s music is inspired by legends from the pas, records he listened to in his youth. This inspiration moved him in the right direction to find his groove and melodies. The lyrics of every song are autobiographic.

“People say I’m old-school but I believe an album is a full story which you only will understand and feel if you listen to all songs from the beginning until the end. Especially when the artist writes and creates his own art. So press play and enjoy the ride!”

Rayn wrote lyrics, produced, engineered, edited, programmed, recorded percussion keyboard synths and arranged all the songs, one by one, assisted by a talented team of people. Rayn worked with some of the finest international musicians in his network, including names that worked on his first album. One of them is guitarist Lorijn von Piekartz, who is a regular player at the Bulldog Hotel with his brother Daniel. Lorijn is also known as the guitarist in the band of Dutch singer MAAN. He is also guitarist of the band of The Voice of Holland.

Accordionist Eddy Hoorenman is a fan of Johnny Meijer and has copied his style of playing. Drummer Huub Eikenboom is a fan of John Engels and Cesar Zuiderwijk (Golden Earring). He’s got the same sense of swing. The two musicians have been successfully working together for years as the Rembrandt Duo.

Eddy was born in Amsterdam and still lives in the heart of the City. Through the Amsterdam music school, an accordion club and private lessons, Eddy was young when he started playing at parties. At one of his performances he met his idol Johnny Meijer. A good and friendly contact was established. Johnny played once at the San Remo bar when he asked Eddy to replace him. In 1974 is was the first time Eddy played with bassist/singer Manke Nelis.

Huub was born and raised in Maastricht. Becoming a drummer was his childhood dream. Immediately after school he started working in Germany, Belgium and later on the Canary Islands (Spain). In the 1970s Huub decided to continue his career in Amsterdam. There he played in Restaurant Dubois where he met Johnny Jordaan, Aunt Leen, Willy Alberti, Imca Marina and other artists from the Amsterdam music scene. In a club named The Shorts of London, Eddy and Huub formed the Trio Manke Nelis with bassist Manke Melis. They became nationally known with hits such as “Kleine Jodeljongen”, “Laat de hele boel maar waaien” and “Ik zing mijn serenade”. It was the beginning of a unique collaboration.

The sound of Mosquito can best be described as a combination of Funk, R&B, Reggae, Country and Latin Jazz, in which the tight harmonious singing of the band is central.

The Amsterdam band was founded in 2004 by singer/guitarist Theo "Mosquito" Taihitu and drummer/singer Albert "Buddy" la Fonteine. After several changes in the formation, Mosquito really took shape in 2007 when the missing link presented itself: the Venezuelan metal bassist / singer José Gregorio Rangel Abreu, known from the band LABERINTO. By combining the different musical backgrounds of the band members, their passion for tequila and rum, Mosquito has meanwhile developed a style and sound of its own that makes you want to dance.

During Red Light Jazz 2019, Mosquito treats the public on a musical journey that appeals to the imagination, with exhilarating Caribbean rhythms and hilarious but sometimes heart-breaking stories. Always with a wink and a great sense of humor.

Hans Dulfer (1940) is one of Holland's best known and most versatile musicians and highly acclaimed saxophonists. He closely follows the latest trends, but maintains to be a typical jazz musician. For many years Hans prefers to perform on stage rather than in the recording studio. When in the nineties he finally becomes serious about recording, large-scale success follows in the Netherlands and even a star status in Japan.

Cyril Directie (1970) has been a side man for Hans Dulfer for almost two decades and is also one of Hollands most wanted drummers. Cyril worked with many Dutch and international artists and is also producing records. After a period of almost 15 years not recording or releasing any new solo material, Cyril convinced Hans to hit the studio to produce an album based on saxophone and drums. Guests players Candy Dulfer, Henny Vrienten and others joined the project.

The result is a unique album: DUO DULFER DIRECTIE, released in 2018 by ZIP RECORDS.

Tijs Klaassen is a double bass player and composer who grew up within the Amsterdam jazz scene. During the last four months of 2017, he studied in Philadelphia and New York with greats such as Ron Carter, Ben Street and David Wong. Although all that Tijs learned during his studies in US was of enormous importance to him, it made him realize just how much he values his European roots.

Tijs therefore strives to naturally combine the timbre and concepts of the great European composers from the 20th century with those of modern jazz musicians. This objective led him to form his own quintet with like-minded musicians. The band members were not only brought together because of their excellent playing, but also because all are composers themselves. Each musician therefore approaches the pieces as a performer as well as a co-writer. The end result is a constantly evolving group sound that reflects both European classical music and the energy of the contemporary American jazz scene.

The band members all belong to the new generation of Amsterdam jazz musicians who are very active within the Dutch jazz scene.

The name The Red Boot Quartet refers to the first Red Light Jazz performance in 2015 of this now famous occasion formation in Café De Roode Laars on the Zeedijk. The undisputed leader of the quartet is the born Amsterdammer Ronald Jansen Heijtmajer (1947).

Ronald studied clarinet and saxophone at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in the seventies and released the Fingerbustin album for the VPRO / BASTA label. As a member of the Dutch Orchestra, Ronald can be heard on various CD’s that BASTA has released over the years. Ronald played at many festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival. Ronald continued to play after reaching his retirement age. He still likes performing, especially playing at the Red Light Jazz Festival in the heart of Amsterdam.

Besides Ronald, the one-armed trumpeter Menno Daams (1961) is a striking appearance in the jazz quartet. Like Ronald, Menno is also ‘Amsterdammer’ in heart and soul. Before he lost his right arm at the age of 12, Menno played guitar. While he was trained at a young age by Freddy Grin - at the time solo cornet of the Concertgebouw Orchestra - Menno started playing jazz with friends in the style of his great example Louis Armstrong. At 16 he could already arrange. In 1987 Menno was admitted to the Sweelinck Conservatory where he studied jazz trumpet under the direction of Charles Green. In 1988 Menno graduated cum laude from the University of Amsterdam as a historian specialized in Ancient History.

From 1992 to 2000, Menno was a trumpet player and arranger of The Beau Hunks, a jazz group that also gained fame outside the country's borders. From 1996 to 2003 Menno played in The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw for which he wrote arrangements. Menno also arranged for the Metropole Orkest and the Dutch Swing College Band. In recent years, Menno played with Jake Hanna, Scott Hamilton, Lee Konitz, Toots Thielemans, Monty Alexander and many others.

Immediately they recognized their affinity for each other, both as musicians and individuals. Herwig and Teepe joined forces on many productive projects which included CDs, concerts and jazz education. Herwig is currently teaching at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen where Teepe has been the director of Jazz Studies since 2001. Now, more than two decades later, they continue to perform with each other as prosperously as ever.

Herwig is a professor of jazz trombone, jazz improvisation, and jazz composition and arrangement at Rutgers University.

The intimacy and intensity of Gumbo & The Monk’s (semi) acoustic show makes the audience feel as if they are in an original Mississippi Juke Joint.

Like the South-American tyranni bird that can both sing and scream, whistle and shriek, this “flock” creates wonderful soundscapes of noises and beauty. They don’t choose between electronic or acoustic, synths or woodwinds. Within this contrast is harmony, and within disparity is unity.

The Amsterdam-based Tyranni Flock consists of award-winning young musicians, playing fresh, lyrical and exciting new music. All five coming from different musical backgrounds, with the uncommon combination of EWI, vocoder and flutes, creating one fluid sound. Their debut EP was released in 2018 followed by numerous shows in the Netherlands. During this tour they reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Jazz Competition 2018. In the early summer of 2019 the first single will be released in preparation of EP number 2 in the fall.

Quotes:
“Strong compositions, innovative and tight, beautiful ensemble-playing and interesting soloists (...) Live a true experience.”
Co de Kloet (Jazzism/NPO Soul & Jazz)

“With a fusion sound, referring to the jazzrock of the 70’s, that fits today’s time. Hip, groovy, nerdy and very danceable. Genre borders do not apply, neither do cliches."
Matthilde Löffler (JazzHalo)

The repertoire of DUBB is influenced by the richness of the ‘music of black origin’: jazz, kaseko, gospel, R&B, soul, funk, latin et cetera. DUBB is initiated and musically directed by musicians of Fra Fra Sound. The band aims to establish a sustainable foundation for creative musical growth and development. JONAS HELLBORG

In 1978 the 20 year old Swedish bassist Jonas Hellborg embarked on a venture that was for the time quite unique. Inspired by Keith Jarrett’s solo piano and British bass player Colin Hodgkinson’s inventive use of chords on bass, Hellborg developed his own set of new techniques for the bass guitar.

His adventurous approach led to a set at the Montreux Jazz Fest which in turn led to associations with several of the important Jazz/Fusion players of the day. Michael Brecker, Michael Shrieve, Billy Cobham, Reebop Kwaku Baah and John McLaughlin who hired Hellborg for his reformed Mahavishnu Orchestra.

In 1979 Hellborg released his first Solo Bass recording The Bassic Thing followed in 1982 by Elegant Punk. This record eventually caught the ear of producer Bill Laswell. The two met through drummer Michael Shrieve’s introduction and eventually besides several recording projects opened a recording studio together in Greenpoint New York.

Hellborg spent most of the 90’s and into the 00’s recording and touring with his own groups. These would include players like Ginger Baker, Shawn Lane, Jens Johansson, Anders Johansson, Bernie Worrell, Jeff Sipe, Selvaganesh and many others. The Solo Bass project continued thru the years. The Silent Life was recorded in 1990 and recently remastered and released again.

With 40 years of solo performances under his belt Hellborg has developed a powerful and intriguing voice. It is bass like you’ve never heard it.

IDA NIELSEN & THE FUNKBOTS

The badass Danish bass player Ida Nielsen, also dubbed Prince's "Funk Princess", was discovered by Prince in 2010. She was a member of The New Power Generation and rock trio 3rdeyegirl until Prince’s death in 2016. Since then, Ida has made a name for herself as a solo artist and band leader with an energetic mix of jazz, funk, rock and pop. Since the release of her third solo album Turnitup (2016), Ida has toured Europe, Asia, Australia and the US with her own band The Funkbots.

In januari 2019 kwam Ida’s vierde soloalbum TIME 2 STOP WORRYING (bout the weird stuff) uit. Oldschool-funk vermengd met hiphop en Nusoul en een aantal mooie soul-geïnspireerde ballads. Dit is het werk van Ida de funk bassist - met een ingebouwde passie voor experimenten en het zware ritme van de bas.

Her fourth album "TIME 2 STOP WORRYING (bout the weird stuff)" was released in January 2019. The album once again shows Ida’s acoustically diverse repertoire: Oldschool funk mixed with hiphop and Nusoul. Add to this a sprinkle of beautiful soul inspired ballads, sexy and cool tunes reaching beyond the passionate. But make no mistake. This is the work of Ida the funk bass player – with a built-in passion for experiments and the heavy rhythm of the bass.

"Ida Nielsen - Funk Goddess"
(Bass player magazine)

"Ida is a mother plucker"
(Prince)

"Her name is Ida and she´ll eat a bass"
(Prince)

DJ MAESTRO

You will never hear a deejay spin that embraces such an enormous variety of styles: one quick look into his massive music collection and you'll find a John Coltrane record next to a Cerrone one; a Nina Simone next to a Fela Kuti. Or even better: a Masters at Work next to a Chet Baker. Hear DJ Maestro spin and you'll understand why some people call him a musical roller coaster.

Bas van Lier is inspired by heavy "soul jazz cats" such as Les McCann and Ramsey Lewis. Combine his love for contemporary R&B and his knowledge of traditional jazz heroes and you get a unique sound; powerful, bluesy and at the same time subtle. Van Lier stands out with his catchy melodies and catchy sense of rhythm. This makes him not only appreciated by true jazz connoisseurs, but also by a young audience!

A dreamy duo that will take you on a journey through Oldschool R&B, Jazzy and Soulful songs. Warm voices, sultry piano sounds, tasteful melodies and recognizable songs performed on piano makes them a strong duo.

Wynonna developed her love for singing at a young age. By growing up with Soul and R&B music, she was determined to follow her passion. For example, she completed a study in Pop Music and studied Jazz & Pop at the Artez conservatory in Arnhem. She has gained a lot of stage experience at locations such as Luxor Live, Zwarte Cross and various festivals. She is no stranger to Hotel TwentySeven as she has already been a guest at several Sunday Sessions. She is currently writing her own music.

Deborah started playing the classical piano at the age of 8, years later she gave in to ‘light’ music and taught herself to play bass guitar. Although she has never released the piano, she is currently studying bass guitar and double bass in Zwolle at the Jazz & Pop conservatory. She also plays in various bands and works on her own music.

During the Red Light Jazz Festival at Bar TwentySeven they will not only be playing covers but also their own music for the first time.

Sultry jazz and deep blues by 7-string miracle guitarist Charlie Hunter and diva Lucy Woodward, who previously sang with Snarky Puppy, Rod Stewart and Pink Martini.

Charlie Hunter and Lucy Woodward exude fun on stage with their seductive versions of jazz, blues, country and vintage pop songs; a tasteful, thoughtful repertory of which an album will be released this year. Clips of the brand new trio on YouTube sound promising, with songs by Nina Simone, Willie Dixon and Lucinda Williams, and a surprising role for percussionist Keita Ogawa.

Charlie Hunter is hailed among guitar aficionandos as a unique phenomenon on 7- and 8-string guitar, simultaneously playing melodies, chords and bass lines while improvising and holding an unmistakable groove. He previously collaborated with Norah Jones, John Mayer and D’Angelo.

Lucy Woodward is a singer with Dutch roots who grew up in New York. She recorded various solo albums, wrote pop hits and sang with Pink Martini and Snarky Puppy. She also worked with Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan and Carole King. In 2018 Lucy Woodward performed at Red Light Jazz with her (Dutch) band.

‘Lucy’s a ball, equally appreciable for fans of melodic sing-along baubles and highbrow aficionados of finely honed musical composition’ (Billboard).

‘It’s almost unfair to call Charlie Hunter a guitarist. His musicianship far exceeds what mere mortals can do with a few strings and a hunk of wood. It’s easy to forget that he has 10 fingers, just like the rest of us’ (Premier Guitar).

Kelvin Allison started singing at a young age, played in musicals and proved to be a true chameleon in the music industry. He studied music and reached the final of The X-Factor in 2010. In the meantime he became an artist, singer, entertainer, lyricist, composer, producer and pianist.

Kelvin was part of the successful DJ formation Kris Kross Amsterdam of the brothers Jordy and Sander Huisman, not to be confused with the well-known American rap duo Kris Kross. After a few years, Kelvin opted for a solo career. As a copywriter/composer, Kevin has worked with DJ Maike Mago, UK's Tough Love, Norwegian producer Jesper Borgen, DJ / producer LVNDSCAPE and the band Causes.

On Saturday evening June 8, Kevin performs at the Bulldog Hotel with guitarist Lorijn von Piekartz. Together with his brother Daniel, Lorijn is a regular player at the Bulldog Hotel.

Hans Dulfer is one of the best-known saxophonists in the Netherlands. He played, amongst others, with Boy Edgar, John McLaughlin, Willem Breuker, Jan Akkerman and Herman Brood.

As a teenager Hans taught himself to play the saxophone. Tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins was his great example. At the end of the 1950s, Dulfer was active in the combo of Clous van Mechelen. Later Hans played in various groups such as Heavy Soul Inc. (with drummer Han Bennink and guitarist John McLaughlin), Ritmo Natural (the former rhythm section of Max Woiski jr.), Theo Loevendie Consort, Reflud ("Dulfer" spelled backwards), De Perikels and Future Groove Express.

In 1969 Dulfer won the Wessel Ilcken Award, an oeuvre prize named after drummer Wessel Ilcken, in recognition of his great merit for jazz. From 1980 that prize is called the "Boy Edgar Award".

In addition to being a musician, Hans has been a board member of the Bimhuis, columnist for Dutch music magazine OOR, director of Paradiso, radiohost of VPRO programs such as Streetbeats and Hothouse, as well as car salesman for Opel / General Motors.

In 1992, Dulfer and the Surinam Music Ensemble released the "Kid Dynamite Suite", a musical ode to the legendary Surinam saxophonist Kid Dynamite (Arthur Parisius, 1911-1963) who often performed in the Casablanca jazz café on the Zeedijk. Two years later, after a few outstanding reviews, the Suite was performed again. The prestigious Bird Award is also one of the prizes awarded to Hans. In 2002, Dulfer was named ‘Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion’.

On his 75th birthday Hans received the Andreas Medal from the deputy mayor of Amsterdam for his great merit for the city. In December 2015, the authobiographic book "The Story of His Life!" Young & Foolish ’ was published.

For decades, Dulfer performed every Wednesday evening at Alto, a jazz café in the Korte Leidsedwarsstraat. Nowadays Hans plays with his band on Wednesday evenings at The Bulldog Palace on the Leidseplein.

Last year there was more interest in Hans Dulfer's concert at Casa Rosso than the capacity of the venue allowed. Fans who arrived 10 minutes before showtime had to be referred to other shows at the festival. So if you want to see Hans Dulfer and his fantastic band perform at Casa Rosso this year, come early!

Singer Christine Wiltshire, originally a native of Brooklyn, New York, started her professional career as in the Luther Vandross quintet Luther in 1976 and broke through internationally with the Patrick Adams's group Musique by 1978 with international hits as In The Bush and Keep On Jumpin’, which resulted in a Gold Record for album Musique and her group was nominated Billboard’s “Best Girl Group” as part of the group “Musique” in 1978. She also composed for the group.

Although not on the record cover of Alphonse Mouzon's produced group POUSSEZ! Christine did all (lead-)vocals for that project. "Come On And Do It" and "Never Gonna Say Goodbye" became hits.

Christine got her biggest hit song with "Weekend", originally recorded by Patrick Adams' studio group Phreek of which Wiltshire was a member. The song was played by Larry Levan yet not commercially available. It did not enter any charts in 1976. In the early 1980s, William Socolov, co-owner of Sleeping Bag Records, invited Levan to record a new version of "Weekend". It became more successful than the original version, and came in the British pop chart and No. 9 on the Billboard Dance chart in 1983. In 2016 "Weekend" was re-released with Blaqhol Remixes and has entered various European charts.

Christine Wiltshire toured around the world with Luther Vandross, Zulema, Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes, Samantha Sang, The Marvelettes & Marianne Faithful and others. As a session singer she can be heard on recordings by Lou Reed (female vocals on "Walk On The Wild Side"), Melba Moore, Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), John Phillips (Mamas and Papas), John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Jocelyn Brown, Zulema, Candi Staton, Loleatta Holloway, Eddie Kendricks (The Temptations), Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Herbie Mann, Latoya Jackson, Cuba Gooding Sr. and Jimmy Cliff.

Through the years Christine now also developed herself as a Jazz and Standards singer and she performs songs from The Great American Songbook at Supper Clubs and intimate venues such as Club Dauphine and Nick Vollebregt's Jazz Café in Laren. Since 2016 Christine Wiltshire lives in The Netherlands.

THE RED BOOT QUARTET
19:30 - 22:00
<div class="eventpoploc"><a href="https://redlightjazz.com/en/locations/de-roode-laars/">De Roode Laars</a></div><div class="eventdatum">Saturday June 8</div><div class="eventpoptijd">19:30</div>

From 2008 to 2015, Menno was a lecturer at the Conservatory in Amsterdam and a guest lecturer at other conservatoires. Menno currently gives private lessons and is involved in the annual 'Classic Jazz Workshop' in Ascona Switzerland. In addition to performing with The Red Boot Quartet every now and then, Menno has his own jazz quartet: The Unaccounted Four.

The other two members of the band are singing Double-bass player Inge Klinge and singing guitarist Klaas Fopma. Klaas and Inge perform regularly as the duo 'Mrs Bass'.

The Amsterdam jazz quartet Uncharted Land consists of Terra Lasès (tenor saxophone, vocals), Daniel Hooglandt (piano), Yuri Heiligers (double bass) and Leon Yegenoglu (drums). These young and talented members of the group have been playing in this formation for more than two years.

They know each other from the different big bands of the recently deceased jazz legend Peter (“Jazz is fun, but serious fun”) Guidi. There the foundation was laid for their love of jazz. It brought them to numerous important jazz venues at home and abroad. For example, with the Junior Jazz Unlimited Big Band, they did various gigs in New York, where they attended a workshop in the famous Lincoln Center.

Despite their relatively short existence, Uncharted Land sounds like a matter of course. It sparkles, swings and radiates great vitality. Their playing is sometimes exuberant, at other times modest, but always creative in improvisations. The repertoire includes - in addition to standards - pieces by contemporary jazz composers. Since the foundation, the quartet has been coached by bassist Peter Bjornild, teacher at the Jazz Academy.

K-STREET JAZZBAND

The K-Street Jazz band is arguably one of the more youthful bands playing traditional New Orleans style street jazz in Europe today. In fact, it's pretty fair to say that in a scene dominated by old jazz cats K-Street Jazz are looking like a bunch of kittens! Mind you, those late twenties can be deceptive because the band is part of a much wider and older jazz tradition.

The southwestern part of the Netherlands has a unique culture when it comes to street jazz, with the internationally renowned Breda Jazz Festival at its epicenter. The nearby town of Bergen op Zoom has an especially dense spread of jazz bands, demonstrated by the 2015 documentary 'New Orleans on the Scheldt', which by chance also happened to immortalize the K-Street Jazzband for posterity.

If there's anything this band tries to prove in every performance it gives, it's that traditional jazz is anything but a dusty phonograph record playing softly in some elderly mans attic. It's music that's meant to be played live, in the streets!

Formed in 2012, the K-Street Jazzband has become a regular at many traditional jazz festivals in the Netherlands and in more recent years has steadily been performing at (and returning to) a number of international venues, including the Celler Jazztage in Germany and prestigious River Boat Jazz Festival in Denmark and Red Light Jazz.

Press:

"Daytripper" is an impressive showcase for Deborah J. Carter and her band to spread their skills in transforming the most famous compositions into something new that you have never heard before.
Dirk Binsau Jazz-Not-Jazz (D)

You have to have the guts and qualities of a jazz singer like Deborah J. Carter to go with funky groovy and smoothly swinging versions across the Beatles. Fixing a Hole, Oh Darling, Daytripper, I Will, Here, There and Everywhere, and Yesterday are inventively transformed by Carter into new pieces in her own style. Pure Jazz with scat vocals and extra attention to the lyrics.

In the turbulent year 1927, Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic Ocean with his plane The Spirit of Saint Louis. “Lucky Lindy hops Atlantic”, headed the newspapers, and two continents suddenly lay side by side. Swinging jazz from America conquered the old continent, ensuring dance pleasure for the young, worries for parents and dignitaries. Since its foundation in 2015, Spirit of St. Louis plays authentic American swing, blues and gospel music. In a brass band setting the charismatic crooner has a central role. Good chance you will find the group in the open air: unplugged, surrounded by swing and blues dancers who show that the spirit of that time is still alive. In the summer of 2018 the band played at various festivals, among others the Zwarte Cross in Lichtenvoorde. Not on a stage, but in between the audience. Excelsior Recordings released the Spirit’s first song on March 1 2019, a catchy cover of Lucky Millinder’s Clap Your Hands, recorded and produced by Paul Willemsen (Ruben Hein, The Gospel Sessions, BRUUT!, Beans & Fatback).

Entree: €120

SOLD OUT

The Red Light Jazz Dinner is guaranteed to kick off in style at the entrance, where guests are received as VIPs and photographed on the red carpet as though it were a film premiere. Afterwards the guests are accompanied by lovely hostesses to a six-person table in the atmospheric Olof’s Chapel, transformed into a luxurious nightclub. Chef Chris Naylor from Michelin star restaurant Vermeer has concocted a fantastic 3-course menu, complete with an exquisite wine pairing.

Performing during the dinner will be the Round Midnight Orchestra, a jazz orchestra consisting of top musicians from the Dutch jazz scene. With their new show, Crooners Night Club, they transport the audience back in time to Las Vegas clubs in the ‘50s, the heyday of The Rat Pack (Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.). After dinner a concert by none other than Candy Dulfer and her jazz formation featuring bass player Harry Emmery will conclude a fabulous and unforgettable evening.

Candy continues to push boundaries with her album Together which was released in 2017. The album was inspired by what is great in jazz, disco, soul, dance and r&b, but is also a contemporary interpretation of what’s happening in music and in the world today. Candy created a personal and unique blend of musical genres & influences, bound together by her trademark sound, showcasing her versatility.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 28 years since Candy Dulfer rose to fame with her collaborations with Dave Stewart (the worldwide number 1 smash hit Lily was here) and of course the legendary Prince, whose tongue-in-cheek recommendation (“When I want sax, I call Candy”) in the "Partyman" video made the world sit up and notice the young, glamorous and talented sax player at his side. Their collaboration continued over the years with many studio sessions, TV show appearances, award show performances (including the Grammy Awards), and concert tours around the globe, including Candy joining Prince’s NPG band as a permanent member for his record-shattering Musicology tour & album.

Besides Prince, Candy has been fortunate to work - both in the studio and on stage - with some of the biggest names in music, including Van Morrison, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Mavis Staples, Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and many others.

Despite these high-profile collaborations, Candy mainly focused on her solo career, starting her own band at age 13 and touring the world ever since. Her first solo album Saxuality earned her a Grammy Award nomination, the combined world-wide sales of her solo albums top 2.5 million copies, and she has had several number 1 hits in the USA.

In between her many concert tours around the globe, she still manages to join Dutch female supergroup the Ladies of Soul for their annual sold-out concerts at the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, is a headline performer on Jazz Cruises in the USA and Europe, is an ambassador for the Dutch ALS Foundation.

In the fall of 2017 she released her long-awaited autobiography ‘Sax, Candy & Rock-’n’-Roll’ (in Dutch only, English version coming soon) in which she tells her story - in her own words. Illustrated with dozens of rare photos, it is an intimate and deeply personal account of her life, onstage and offstage, featuring unique insights into life on the road, funny backstage stories about working with some of music’s greatest artists, and inspiring life lessons learned from traveling the world.

Catch Candy Dulfer and her band at the exclusive dinner event at Red Light Jazz 2019.

Lynn (Lienke Iburg) and Shorty (Sjoerd Arends) know each other from the different bands in which they sing together. Both small in size but not to be missed! They complement each other beautifully musically and their voices fit nicely together. They bring their repertoire with a lot of feeling, pleasure and enthusiasm and clearly have love for what they do. They love to make a connection with the audience.

Under the guidance of Shorty on guitar or keyboards, they play and sing from intimate easy listening to powerful and swinging music. From the well-known classics to the latest hits. When the music asks for it, Lynn picks up a tambourine or other percussion instrument.

Uptown Collective is the perfect mix between a live performance and a DJ. The combination of a professional DJ and one or more energetic live musicians brings the best of both worlds together. The DJ and live musicians know to play practically all types of music styles.

Uptown Collective will be a beautiful combination of our all-round DJ Miss Brown together with the mega soulful singer Felipa Fernandez.

Miss Brown is a half Lebanese and Hungarian but born in Amsterdam (Dutch) DJ. A daughter of two artists (musicians, acrobats and singers) that have travelled the world and ended up living in Amsterdam. She realized soon enough that spinning and making music was her thing. So after her study she literally dropt her diploma somewhere and raced to one of her gigs. She’s still going strong with spinning records and making people happy with her music since 2000.

Felipa was born on February 21st 1986, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to a Danish mother and a Mexican father, Felipa Fernandez (Felipa Josine Fernandez Anderson) grew up in a multicultural and international environment. Her love of music started at an early age. Her father being a filmmaker and a photographer and her mother a writer, she grew up in a creative home where, from early on, she was exposed to all the arts. At the age of eight she joined a local children’s theater school where she took classes in dance, music and theater. That’s when she realized that the stage was the place for her. She went on singing and acting all throughout her youth, and after high school she studied music in Amsterdam. Currently Felipa lives and works as a singer in Amsterdam. Her work includes singing in various bands as lead singer and backing vocalist. She also works as an improvisational vocalist with DJs and live musicians for events around the country, and she occasionally teaches children’s music and singing workshop’s. However, first and foremost she considers herself a singer/songwriter and has always pursued her dreams and goals as a solo artist.

As the Uptown Collective for Red Light Jazz they will play Loungy, Soulful but Recognizable tracks that will end (or start) your Sunday evening beautifully.

Heartfelt homage to Cuban music from past to present, led by the widely renowned pianist Hilario Durán, who grew up in Havana.

Cuban pianist/composer Hilario Durán makes his instrument sound like an orchestra and this virtuoso style makes him a favorite of legendary compatriot Chucho Valdés. With his Contumbao Quartet he pays homage to Cuba’s rich musical history, with a repertory that spans the entire spectrum of Cuban music.

In the 1970s Hilario Durán was Chucho Valdés’ chosen successor in Cuba’s most modern big band, Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, which also contained members of the future group Irakere. In the 80s Durán worked with Arturo Sandoval and Dizzy Gillespie and made his international breakthrough. In the 90s he migrated to Canada where he leads his Latin Jazz Big Band. He has performed with musicians as varied as Michel Legrand and Michael Brecker.

Ruth Geerse is a Dutch singer, composer, pianoplayer and guitarplayer. Throughout the years Ruth sang in many different settings; from rockband to Big Band, soulband and as a singer songwriter accompanying herself on piano and guitar. In 2002 Ruth graduated from Rotterdam Conservatory and since then she played on the Uitmarkt, Vondelpark Openluchttheater, several Jazzfestivals and reached Finale Grote Prijs van Nederland Singer Songwriter.

What is striking about Ruth is that she vocally combines many styles in music in one style; powerful Ruth style. She has soul power and features jazz timing. Her strong lyrics show that she’s not only a singer and musician, but also a gifted writer who makes you think twice about certain facts of life.

Since 2017 she found the perfect setting to express herself and sing and arrange her own songs; a mix of Pop, Jazz and Latin with Dirkjan de Koning on drums and Guus van Beelen on bassguitar. Ruth writes the songs, sings and plays the piano.

Have you always wanted to hear free jazz improvisation on Wayne Shorter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pop Songs or Scandinavian Jazz 'Norwegian Wood Style' on Sunday mornings instead of psalms and hymns or those boring TV programs. The duo Jessie Breve (sax) & Freek Mulder (double bass) make your Sunday start unforgettable.

With their small line-up of double bass and saxophone, these last-minute replacements of Jazz The Two of Us (bass player Lito unfortunately got injured) approach the songs with peace and quietness, so that every note matters. Honesty is central to their improvisations. Less is more. The latter is quite nice on the Sunday morning for those jazz lovers who still have some problems with the Saturday night RLJ excesses. Hard heads become soft again due to healing jazz sounds. A symbiosis that guides the listener on unknown paths. But no worries getting lost. You will stay at Red Light Jazz Amsterdam.

Carly E. (Carlijn van Wijk, 1989) has played the cello from a young age. Between the ages of 12 and 18, Carly toured in Europe and China with the Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. In 2012 she moved to London before moving again a year and a half later to Argentina, where she stayed until 2016. Far away from home she discovered her own music. She became a singer-songwriter and solo artist, accompanying herself on a cello, also with loop pedal. In 2016 she released her first EP “Blue Funny You”, recorded in Buenos Aires.

Back in the Netherlands, she attracted attention at TEDx and with various performances at festivals. Carly E. formed her own band in 2017 with guitarist Richie Richman, drummer Efraim Schulz-Wackerbarth and double bass player Annick Odom. Their analog recorded debut album Timeless Thoughts was released on vinyl in 2018 in a sold out venue ‘Cinetol’. She started off the year 2019 with playing solo performances in major venues like the 'DeLaMar Theater' and the 'Amstelkerk'. She plays also in other well-known venues in Amsterdam like 'De Roode Bioscoop' and she will play on various festivals like the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh this summer.

Carly E.’s cello idol is Yo- Yo Ma, and she loves the old jazz and soul ladies like Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. Her big example is Andrew Bird. This combination makes her music a mix of jazz, pop and folk with an intuitive poetic groove.

RED LIGHT JAZZ DINER
