A duo project between jazz pianist Rob van Bavel and jazz vocalist Ronald Douglas had long been on their bucket list. But life sometimes has a way of delaying the things you truly desire. Now, the project is finally complete and has taken shape in a CD with the fitting title: From the Heart.
The album is one into which Douglas and Van Bavel have poured their heart and soul. With a strong focus on lyrical storytelling, it has become a ballad project that touches on themes from real life. Thanks to Douglas’s arrangements and accompaniment and Van Bavel’s interpretations, the result carries a deeply personal touch.
During the concert at Theater Mascini, the songs from the CD are interspersed with plenty of swing, while Douglas offers the audience a glimpse into his heart and his life.
Ronald Douglas – Five Decades of Dedication to Jazz
For nearly 50 years, Ronald Douglas has been active as a nationally and internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist. After some time working in social services, he decided in 1993 to enroll at the Conservatory in Hilversum. Lessons from American jazz vocalist Deborah Brown quickly led to performances in his very first year with the Metropole Orkest and the AVRO Radio Orchestra The Skymasters — immediately establishing him as the new voice in Dutch jazz.
Douglas has released five CDs, with his latest, Lotus Blossom, being the most successful. In 2006, he became the first European to win an online jazz competition and performed at the East Coast Jazz Festival in Washington.

Rob van Bavel – Master Pianist and Jazz Icon
Rob van Bavel is a nationally and internationally acclaimed jazz pianist who has been active for nearly 40 years. He can be heard on over 200 CDs and has performed with legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Woody Shaw, and Chet Baker.
As a teacher, Van Bavel has long been an inspiring presence at the Conservatories of The Hague and Amsterdam, and he is a highly sought-after masterclass instructor abroad. Of the five CDs released by Ronald Douglas, Van Bavel contributed to four.
