Barencia & Beiggja – Double Concert with Worlds of Sound
On Saturday evening, June 7, the Bimhuis presents two promising bands during the Red Light Jazz Festival, both with strong ties to Amsterdam. Barencia is led by pianist Xavi Torres, who brings together flamenco and jazz. Beiggja is the new group in which saxophonist Kika Sprangers spreads her wings toward Scandinavia.
Barencia is named after an imaginary city halfway between Barcelona and Florence. Expect a magical fusion of diverse traditions: music and dance, flamenco and jazz. The group was formed by pianist Xavi Torres, a major talent from the Catalan jazz scene. A special role is reserved for Mexican dancer Karen Lugo, who blends flamenco with contemporary dance. Double bassist Michelangelo Scandroglio is a rising talent from Italy, and drummer Bernardo Guerra from Florence regularly collaborates with Stefano Bollani.
In the heart of winter, they gathered in a house just outside Oslo, nestled in a snow-covered forest. The house belonged to drummer Per Oddvar Johansen, known for his recordings on the renowned ECM label. The other musicians were saxophonist Kika Sprangers, pianist Kjetil Mulelid, and bassist Mats Eilertsen, also an ECM recording artist. Surrounded by the crisp silence of the landscape, they began to play. The recordings led to their debut album Morning, which will be released this summer on the Norwegian label Hubro. Now, they continue their story on stage.
Barencia on Green Pilot Tour
Barencia is taking part in the Green Pilot Tour, a project by the Europe Jazz Network (EJN) co-funded by the European Union under the Creative Europe programme. The aim of the Green Pilot Tour is to promote sustainability, fair pay, inclusion, and gender balance in concert touring.
