Double Espresso – Piano Lions at Theater Mascini
Saxophone quartet Double Espresso takes the stage at Theater Mascini during Red Light Jazz with their program Klavierleeuwen (“Piano Lions”), featuring music from the Roaring Twenties of both the 20th and 21st centuries. They present swinging pieces by legendary pianists such as Zez Confrey, Jelly Roll Morton, and Duke Ellington, alongside original compositions—drawn from personal stories within the group’s circle—and arrangements of music by their jazz heroes, including bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus.
From Mike Boddé to Mingus
A modern-day piano lion also makes an appearance: the album Quirky Works by pianist Mike Boddé inspired Double Espresso to create several fresh arrangements.
A Unique Lineup Since 2003
Founded in 2003 at the BIMHUIS, Double Espresso is the only all-female improvising saxophone quartet in the Netherlands. Since then, they’ve developed a distinct voice through bold arrangements, powerful solos, and nuanced interplay—performed in their unique lineup of two alto saxophones and two baritone saxophones.
