Arthur Heuwekemeijer & Joris Teepe

The lyrical saxophonist Arthur Heuwekemeijer is a familiar presence at the Red Light Jazz Festival. He performs pieces from the rich Dutch song tradition in a “golden touch of jazz.” Nostalgic melodies pass by, such as Aan de Amsterdamse Grachten, De Motten, Laat me, Het Dorp, Telkens Weer, In ’t groene Dal, and Roodborstje. Arthur’s jazz arrangements are a perfect fit and invite the audience to relive times gone by. It starts with gentle humming, and before you know it, the whole crowd is singing along at the top of their lungs.

Joris Teepe is a Dutch New Yorker with creativity as his trademark. In 1992, the bassist left his home country, the Netherlands, to pursue his dream of becoming a jazz musician in New York.

Lessons from the master and early collaborations
Teepe studied under Ron Carter, the legendary bassist of Miles Davis. A year later, he recorded his first CD with a band he co-led with tenor saxophonist Don Braden. In the following years, he collaborated with jazz legends such as Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune, Billy Hart, and Randy Brecker.

Now, 33 years later, Joris Teepe still lives partly in New York and has recorded 23 albums as a leader or co-leader, and over 65 records as a sideman. His longest collaboration was with Rashied Ali, the last drummer of John Coltrane, with whom he recorded five albums. From 2000 to 2009, Teepe toured the world with Ali.
Other “heavy cats” Joris has performed with include Barry Harris, Bobby Watson, Tom Harrell, John Abercrombie, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, and Mike Clark as well as Dutch greats like John Engels, Benjamin Herman, Eric Ineke, and Rob van Bavel.
