Inspired improvisations from a new ensemble featuring members of Fire! Orchestra
Mats Gustafsson & Goran Kajfes' Cosmic Ear
The new Swedish ensemble Cosmic Ear is open to a wide range of influences — from Malian hunting music and Moroccan gnawa to Swedish folk and Brazilian percussion — all anchored by steady double bass grooves. In doing so, the group carries forward the vision of American free jazz legend Don Cherry, who moved to Sweden in 1970 and focused on blending spiritual traditions with jazz. A key role in Cosmic Ear is played by multi-instrumentalist Christer Bothén, who once performed alongside Cherry himself.
From Fire! Orchestra to Cosmic Ear
Cosmic Ear was founded by saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and trumpeter Goran Kajfeš, who have played together in various large ensembles, including Fire! Orchestra. In their new band, both artists perform on multiple instruments, blending them with electronics. Original compositions by Gustafsson, Kajfeš, and Christer Bothén are interspersed with pieces by Don Cherry, his trio Codona, and Frank Lowe. Bothén alternates between various clarinets and the donso ngoni, the large hunter’s harp from Mali, which he once introduced to Cherry.
