Gumbo & The Monk
A musical journey through the history of the blues
On Friday evening, June 5, Gumbo & The Monk will take you on a musical voyage of discovery through the history of the blues at Hotel Torenzicht. From the juke joints on the cotton plantations of the Mississippi Delta to the blues of cities like Detroit and Chicago.
Authentieke sound en zelfgebouwde instrumenten
To get as close as possible to the original sound, they largely use guitars built (or modified) by Gumbo himself, including cigar box guitars and primitive tube amplifiers. Gumbo has immersed himself in the roots of the blues and traveled multiple times to the southern United States to explore, study, and experience its origins, traditions, and culture firsthand.
Influences and background of The Monk
The Monk, born in the south of Spain, was captivated from a young age by the raw emotion and soul he recognized in blues music from flamenco. His sense of timing, expressive vocals, and charisma have not gone unnoticed—he was described by Arrow Classic Rock as “top tier of Dutch blues.” He also performed as a support act for his great hero, Eric Bibb.
Blues classics and storytelling
In addition to traditional songs, they perform work by artists such as Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Jimmy Reed. Between songs, they share short stories and anecdotes about the history of the blues, the songs, and the instruments used.
Festivals and experience
Gumbo & The Monk have performed at numerous national and international blues and jazz festivals, including multiple appearances at Red Light Jazz.
