A versatile musical career

Van Mechelen was already performing with Hans Dulfer in the Amsterdam Quintet at the age of sixteen. He studied clarinet at the conservatory, with piano as a secondary subject, and toured across Europe with jazz and Latin groups. For a time, he also performed as a saxophonist with the Amsterdam-based rock band The Sharks, which also featured Tol Hansse. In 1978, Van Mechelen received the Zilveren Harp, a Dutch music prize awarded annually to emerging talent.

From jazz stages to Red Light Jazz

During the first edition of Red Light Jazz in 2014, Clous performed at Casa Rosso alongside the much-missed singer Lils Macintosh.
