Samora Pinderhughes
“A multidisciplinary and genre-blurring talent” (DownBeat).
Breaking Boundaries Through Music
Composer, pianist, vocalist, and filmmaker Samora Pinderhughes seeks to break free from traditional genres. As a pianist, he has a strong foundation in jazz and classical music. Today, he uses his work to draw attention to injustices in American society, addressing issues such as capitalism, the prison system, and police violence. This results in surprisingly intimate, carefully composed pieces, candid lyrics, and powerful performances in which the boundaries between jazz, soul, folk, hip-hop, and electronic music dissolve.
Collaborations and New Album Show Artistic Growth
Samora Pinderhughes has previously collaborated with musical innovators such as Robert Glasper, Karriem Riggins, and Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah. On his recent album Venus Smiles Not in the House of Tears, a prominent role is once again played by his sister, the acclaimed flutist Elena Pinderhughes. Samora continues to evolve as a vocalist, revealing a more vulnerable side and focusing on the emotions behind his lyrics. In his current band, he shares the stage with like-minded guitarist and vocalist Elliott Skinner, whose music is released on the British label Ninja Tune.
