‘Same Moon in the Same World’ is a line from a novel by Haruki Murakami. It’s also the title of the ambitious album by tenor saxophonist Alex Hitchcock and guitarist Ant Law. These top talents from British jazz have recorded an album with star players from Londen, New York and Amsterdam. This led to a new band that builds on the sound of the album: energetic, melodic and well-balanced.

The inspiration for Same Moon is the idea that, whilst people may be in separate places geographically, they have shared truths: musical language, human experience, emotions. From our unique vantage points, we are all staring at the same moon. All four band members are featured on the album Same Moon in the Same World, alongside famous jazz musicians such as Linda May Han Oh, Kendrick Scott and Jeff Ballard.

‘Ridiculous technique and harmonic proficiency combined with this progressive creativity that sees him leading the charge in terms of new jazz music in the UK’ (BBC Jazz World about Alex Hitchcock).

‘What a game changer he can be’ (The Guardian over Ant Law).

As son of National Boogie Woogie king Rob Hoeke, Ruben Hoeke was taught to make music at an early age. Ruben has now become a celebrity himself on his instrument: the electric guitar. He can easily be placed amongst the musicians who have lifted the Dutch blues to a higher level.

Since his first performance in 1992, he has toured the Netherlands continuously, played at festivals in Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Estonia, USA, Ireland, Luxembourg and Curaçao, released thirteen albums in different musical genres and performed on stage with countless national and international top musicians.

Media describe Ruben Hoeke as a 'worldclass guitarist' and 'one of Holland finest players of todays scene'. Although Ruben is a guitarist who plays several music styles, the Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll is something that comes to him naturally and straight from the heart. A journalist once defined the band as ‘a mighty blues-formation with an unique sound’ and their performance ‘sparkling as hell, like a F16 with its afterburners tuned up to the max’. With dozens of great reviews the Ruben Hoeke Band will continue delivering their cooking meltingpot of Soul, heavy Rock, Pop, stompin’ Boogie and dirty Rhythm & blues!

Guitarists Servaas Bollen and Alex Konijnenburg alias Gumbo & The Monk bring out the raw sound of the Mississippi Delta Blues. They do so on traditional handmade instruments like the Cigar Box Guitar, License Plate Resonator Guitar and Diddley Bow. With these authentic sounding instruments Gumbo & The Monk are paying a tribute to Robert Johnson, Son House and Mississippi John Hurt. They also play early work of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker. The intimacy and intensity of Gumbo & The Monk’s (semi) acoustic show makes the audience feel as if they are in an original Mississippi Juke Joint.

It's the unfathomable, nonverbal conversation improvising musicians have that sax player Jelske Hoogervorst and guitarist Folker Tettero are trying to catch in their writing and playing with their duo formation Interplay.

Be it a lyrical ballad or an uptime swinging piece. Folker and Jelske traverse the pieces with great ease and a lot of fun to play. Despite the fact that there are only two of them, when listening to them you feel like there is a whole band playing.

The intimate setting the duo creates is an answer to today's society where everything has to be fast with immediate results. Folker and Jelske go for depth and longevity. Depth in fusing their instruments, allowing them to make an increasingly unified musical statement. The long haul, because they don't choose the easy way, but rather the way that comes from the heart and creates the greatest musical impact.

At some point in time we all experience that earth shattering boom of jubilation when we witness something true, joyful and straight from the heart. Now, combine this feeling with a hint of stank and a lil’ pinch of funk and let it cook up a bubbling gumbo of raw, tantalising soul. It is exactly this stew of musical goodness the band THE PULITZERS are looking for. Heck; it is the sole reason for their existence.

Driven by organ, guitar and propelled by percussion and drums, the members of SPARK are four wandering souls tied together by fate who have set out on one, bold mission: Lighting a fire. Using their skills and their drive they are chasing those good old burning tunes and together they meticulously ignite grooving rhythms combined with soulful melodies and jams.

Rooted deep in the tradition of legends like The Meters, Jimmy McGriff and Booker T., this fine bunch of kindred spirits sets out to create original tunes which will get you out of your seat and up on your feet dancing with a funky grin on your face all night long. Expect no less then dedicated musicians, igniting their passion to create one, big sizzling spark.

Tenor saxophonist Wouter Kiers is a well-known figure in the Dutch music world. The stage is his home. Wouter started playing the clarinet at the age of 9, but the tenor sax has been his instrument of choice since 1984. In 2000, Kiers toured Japan with Hans Dulfer. With fellow saxophonist Ruud de Vries, Wouter performed at the North Sea Jazz festival in 2002 with his then group 'Kiers & de Vries' and, in 2005, he performed with the Beatnach band from The Hague for 400,000 people at the Parkpop festival in The Hague. It was during this period that he created the Wouter Kiers Quartet.

Wander through the European jazz landscape with two visionary bands

During the Red Light Jazz festival, a Dutch and a German band will cross paths on our stage. Dutch Mountain Tribe might be based in The Netherlands, but encompasses five nationalities. And German saxophonist Fabian Dudek takes an international perspective with his band as well. This concert is an exchange with the Stadtgarten concert hall in Cologne and is made possible by NICA Artist Development.

Dutch Mountain Tribe spins a web of idiosyncratic melodies, enchanting rhythms and fiery improvisations. Like folk songs from a mythical Dutch mountainside, they are coloured by an arsenal of percussion instruments, flutes, bagpipes and other objects from the immense collection of band leader Koen Boeijenga. This versatile wind player and composer includes both young and established players in his seven-piece band.

For Fabian Dudek, music is a starting point for pure ecstasy. His music is not bound to one genre. He takes example from jazz adventurer Ambrose Akinmusire, but his saxophone playing was also influenced by funk legend Maceo Parker. He collaborated with classical musicians and pop artists and he was a member of the prestigious Bundesjazzorchester. His quartet features the remarkable singing bassist Ruth Goller, who previously collaborated with Paul McCartney and Marc Ribot.

The Amsterdam Organ Trio brings a warm mix of the Hammond organ, saxophone and drums. The three close and longtime friends aim to convey the warm feeling of fun, friendship and some magic.

The band played in Harlem, New York, and has just returned from a small European tour as they visit the Red Light Jazz festival in their hometown of Amsterdam again this year.

On drums you will find Richard Lems. He played with many stars in the Dutch scene. He also played at the North Sea Jazz and Montreux festivals. Robert Mollee (saxophone) played with Denise Jannah, Ellen ten Damme, Ronald Douglas, Fay Claassen, and many others. Organ player Mark Woerde is a relative newbie, although the organ virus caught him at a very young age when his grandma put him between two big Leslie speakers in a music shop pretty close to the festival area.

The trio is very much looking forward to sharing their music at Red Light Jazz 2024.

In New York, she performed with such top musicians as Richard Bona, Ken Peplowski, George Garzone and Ingrid Jensen. For many years now she’s been touring Japan and Europe. Bailey also recorded a total of 10 albums under her own name, teaches at the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston and is the author of several guitar books for Berklee Press.

Joris Teepe (double bass) grew up in The Hague and has lived in New York since 1992. Since 2013, Teepe has divided his time between New York and Amsterdam. Over the course of his career, he has worked with such well-known and even legendary musicians as Benny Golson, Barry Harris, Bobby Watson, Sonny Fortune, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Billy Hart and Randy Brecker. One of his most remarkable achievements was his nine-year association with Rashied Ali (John Coltrane's last drummer), with whom he recorded five albums and toured the world for nine years until the drummer died in 2009. Joris Teepe has led various bands of his own for the past 30 years and recorded 21 CDs under his own name. Although he often performs in Asia and the US, he’s also a welcome musician at European jazz venues and festivals, including the North Sea Jazz festival and Red Light Jazz. Teepe frequently performs with pianist Rob van Bavel, and he also plays in drummer John Engels' trio together with saxophonist Benjamin Herman.

Jamie Peet (drums) is one of the most sought-after drummers in the (inter)national jazz scene. A musician, composer and producer, Peet has always been into music. A child prodigy, he started playing at the young age of five, inspired by his musician father, bass player Michael Peet. In addition to being a guest teacher at various conservatories, Peet regularly performs with formations such as Niels Broos & Jamie Peet, Tinmen & the Telephone and Ben van Gelder. He has also toured with American jazz artists, including Kris Bowers and Gregory Porter. Peet is known for his unique signature and style, and his daring, inventive and colorful contemporary sound.

Red Light Jazz is a multi-day jazz festival taking place in and around the red light district in Amsterdam. It’s primarily this exciting location, the internationally renowned and illustrious Red Light District in the old city center of Amsterdam, that makes the festival so unique. This year will again feature concerts in the Wallonian Church (De Waalse Kerk), including a performance by Hermine Deurloo & Mike Boddé on Friday evening, June 7th, entitled 'Jazz of the Low Countries'.

Fascinated by the sound of the chromatic harmonica, Hermine Deurloo exchanged her alto saxophone for this small instrument and has never looked back. She now performs with artists such as Steve Gadd and Rembrandt Frerichs, as well as with the iconic royal Concertgebouw’s Jazz Orchestra, and the Metropole Orchestra. Although her name may not yet be familiar, you’re sure to know her sound from a commercial: Hermine gives Holland’s famous smoked sausage that little bit of extra spice.

Since 2015 Hermine performs regularly with pianist Mike Boddé. Time and time again, this sorceress effortlessly manages to combine diverse music genres. With their program 'Jazz from the Low Countries' the duo performs music by Toots Thielemans, Rogier van Otterloo and Jacques Brel, among others. Mike enhances the performance with amusing and interesting anecdotes.

In 2018, Hermine Deurloo won the Bernie Bray Harmonica Player of the Year Award, a prestigious prize previously awarded to Toots Thielemans and Stevie Wonder.

Mike Boddé became nationally known for his TV appearances, including those on Kopspijkers, an award-winning Dutch talk show.

Farida Merville, ‘The Girl From Amsterdam’, was born on April 4, 1967 in Surinam. She grew up in both Surinam and the Netherlands. Farida started singing at 17 as a member of the family band 'De Vrolijke Jeugd' of her grandfather. In the early nineties Farida started to become a session and studio singer, at first in the Netherlands and later in Europe and in the USA.

After a performance with Saskia Laroo, Farida met one of the producers of the famous Dutch house-act Quazar (Eric Putten/ Gert van Veen). Her collaboration with Quazar ensured Farida to make name for herself as a top class singer in the Amsterdam dance scene. With Farida Merville as frontlady and co- composer Quazar released two successful albums: The Seven Stars (1991) and Here and Now (1993). The Quazar single Seven Stars (1990) was already an international clubhit at that time.

Farida also worked with the producers of Atlantic Ocean. In 1994 she was frontlady for the group and co-composer of two successful singles for Atlantic Ocean: Body in Motion and Music is a Passion. As a solo artist, Farida also released a number of singles, including I Just Wanna (1996) and Heartbeats (1997) which was produced by Edwin Evers.

Over the years Farida's sound and influences have resulted in a unique mix of different cultures and musical styles. Her music is a mix of NeoSoul, Jazz, Funk and World Music. In 2007 Farida produced her first studio album Question Mark which she released independently in 2010.

In addition to her own work, Farida has been involved in various projects in recent years, including the theater show The Grand Ladies of Jazz, together with Graziëlla and Annemarie Hunsel.

In a sold-out Bijlmer theater and in the Almere theater, songs by Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald were played, accompanied by a live band. In this period of time Farida also collaborated with well-known Ghanaian musicians Blay Ambolly (‘James Brown of Ghana’) and Atongo Zimba. With both musicians she played at various (inter)national festivals.

In 2016 Farida started to perform with Quazar again; in Paradiso (Welcome To The Future Special), in Tivoli/De Helling in Utrecht (History of House) and in 2017 in Luxor in Arnhem (25 years of Quazar).

In 2018 Farida gave a live performance at the North Sea Round Town festival in Rotterdam that was entirely devoted to a Surinamese EP titled Te Yu No, consisting of interpretations and translations into Sranang (Suriname language) of classic jazz songs and soultracks like Nina Simone's Four Woman (Fo Uma), Don Raye & Gene de Paul's You don't know what love is (Yu No Sabi) and Bill Withers' Ain't no sunshine (Te Yu No De).

Until recently, Farida formed the jazz trio Scotch & Soda with Lilian Jarad on piano and Thom Goosens on bass. From 2017 to 2021 Farida participated in the theater show 'The Story of Etta James'. Together with five of her best friends, including Renate Koningsbloem and Denise Jannah, she brought a swinging tribute to the legendary American singer Etta James.

Sunday afternoon June 9 at Café De Kroegtijger, Farida will be assisted by her 'Friends': Ruben Drenthe on keys, Louis Drenthe on bass and Yoran Vroom on drums.

Guitarist and composer Niels Brouwer and singer and lyricist Monica Akihary have successfully performed as a duo under the name BOI AKIH since 1997. For more than 20 years, their band has entranced listeners and garnered critical acclaim. A BOI AKIH concert is an unforgettable experience. With Akihary’s precise timing, tone and charismatic personality, she instantly touches the listener's heart, just as Brouwer's abstract passages are warm and engaging throughout.

BOI AKIH’s repertoire features exciting and groundbreaking explorations that highlight the layered nature of different musical traditions. Their unique sound results from the constant interaction between the musicians and the sources they draw from. It’s a sound that’s unconventional yet accessible, and always offers the audience a glimpse into a world full of emotion and color.

When Akihary won last year’s prestigious Boy Edgar Prize, the most important Dutch prize for jazz and improvised music, the jury proclaimed her “an inspired connector and storyteller” and “a singer who uses her powerful voice as an instrument and displays an unprecedentedly broad palette of timbres.”

Reviews have been equally glowing. In its January 2024 edition, JazzNu wrote: “Monica Akihary's voice is a chapter in itself. In addition to the fact that she impresses in all registers, she has an almost mysterious haze, which fits beautifully into Niels Brouwer's concept that transcends many boundaries.”

And, in October 2023, Salt Peanuts described Akihary as “an original and highly skilled vocalist and sound artist,” who, together with Brouwer, “has evolved into one of Europe's leading vocal artists.”

In August 2023, Jazzism referred to BOI AKI’S sound as: “A special listening experience because they also color outside the lines.”

Bout du Monde (End of the World) is a quartet consisting of four musicians with a respectable track record. Drummer Richard Lems played with all the big names in the Dutch jazz world and beyond (from North Sea Jazz to Montreux). He graduated cum laude from the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. Robert Mollee (saxophone) also has an enormous palmares. He has extensive experience in various styles of music and has performed in various line-ups with Ronald Douglas, Deborah Carter, Greetje Kauffeld, John Engels and many others. Joris Nederpelt Lazarom studied jazz piano at the Royal Conservatory, he played with various large and smaller orchestras at home and abroad and is a producer at his own 12notes.nl. Rob IJsendijk started his bass career in pop music and via Berklee College of Music and others soon ended up in jazz, playing many styles with countless different musicians.

The four musicians of Bout du Monde challenge each other every concert, searching for their musical limits. They know each other from various formations and have played together many times in various other combinations. Their first album 'Hirondelle' was released in 2020 and contains mostly pieces written by Steve Swallow. The second album of Bout du Monde named 'Uncovered' was released in 2022.

With his quartet, Wouter plays well-known and lesser-known jazz tracks in the tradition of his saxophone heroes from the past such as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins.

The Red Light Jazz dinner is the highlight of every edition of the annual Red Light Jazz festival. As in 2023, the exclusive event will once again take place on the final day of the 11th edition of the jazz festival in the Grand Ballroom of Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam.

At the entrance of the ballroom, guests are received as VIPs, after which they’re escorted to their reserved seats at a table for four. That’s where they’ll enjoy Chef Marco van Rutten’s 3-course menu and wine pairing especially created for Red Light Jazz 2024. During the dinner, DJ Phil Horneman will play Wicked Jazz Sounds, whereas a live concert by Candy Dulfer and her fabulous jazz band will take place after dinner.

Wicked Jazz Sounds

Wicked Jazz Sounds has been well known within the Dutch music world, especially as a successful musical platform, for the past 20 years. The music collective played at legendary Sunday club nights in various Amsterdam locations on a non-stop basis for some 18 years, until the coronavirus pandemic put an end to these in 2020. However, since Easter 2024, the iconic club nights have returned in full force. Wicked Jazz Sounds is also known for radio programs, a series of compilation CDs, two band albums as well as the popular playlist TIP44 on Spotify with many thousands of followers.

Candy Dulfer

In addition to Prince, sax player Candy Dulfer has worked - both in the studio and on stage - with some of the biggest names in music, including Van Morrison, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Mavis Staples, Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and many others.

Despite these high-profile collaborations, Candy primarily continues to focus on her successful solo career. She started her own band at the age of 13 and has been touring the world ever since. Her first solo album ‘Saxuality’ earned her a Grammy Award nomination, the combined worldwide sales of her solo albums amount to more than 2.5 million copies, and she has had several number 1 hits in the US.

In between many concert tours around the globe, Candy found the time to join the Dutch supergroup the Ladies of Soul. The popular group, which is comprised of four top Dutch female performers, has for many years featured in sold-out concerts at the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, and is the headline act on Jazz Cruises in the US and Europe. Candy is also ambassador for the Dutch ALS Foundation.

In the fall of 2017, she released her autobiography ‘Sax, Candy & Rock-’n’-Roll’ (in Dutch) in which she tells her personal story. Illustrated with dozens of never-before-seen photos, it’s an intimate and deeply personal account of her life, onstage and offstage, featuring unique insights into life on the road, funny backstage stories about working with some of music’s greatest artists, and inspiring life lessons learned from traveling the world.

In 2021 Candy signed a new record deal with the Mascot Label Group and released her latest album 'We Never Stop' in 2022. The album includes a track with Nile Rodgers of Chic fame.

After an extensive year of touring and promoting her latest album in 2023 and by popular demand, she’s returning to festival and club stages all over Europe, Japan, and the US in 2024. With her passionate stage presence, inspiring and uplifting musical message and accompanied by top-class musicians, she’s ready to hit the stage at the 11th Red Light Jazz Festival. Don’t miss Candy Dulfer and her jazz band at what promises to be an unforgettable Red Light Jazz 2024 dinner event!

Ellen ten Damme dreams away in frivolous transience and holds court, a performance following on from her success shows PARIS-BERLIN and CASABLANCA. Holland’s most versatile singer presents a tragédie lyrique that goes further back in time than ever and is sometimes completely of the present.

Together with her pianist, Ellen ten Damme invites you to enter her world. Her show is full of surprising and recognizable songs where the scabrous excesses are as exhilarating as the shadows are compelling.
