Between tradition and innovation
Martin Diaz stands among a select group of musicians who effortlessly bridge the often-contradictory poles between tradition and innovation. As one of the leading saxophonists and composers of his generation, he has developed a unique artistic identity, weaving jazz with a rich tapestry of musical influences. This project evolves from his earlier quintet into a quartet, where he leads a band composed of outstanding musicians from the Spanish and Dutch jazz scenes.
Music and psychoanalysis
The band’s music is directly influenced by concepts from psychoanalysis. The album’s central theme introduces “El Goce,” a Lacanian term derived from the French word jouissance, referring to a repeated subjective pleasure that ultimately turns into something closer to discomfort. These ideas form the framework for his compositions, shaping both their structure and emotional depth. The interplay between desire, repetition, and the limits of pleasure is reflected in the band’s sound, creating a musical experience that balances fulfillment and frustration. The result is a layered and immersive journey that challenges listeners both intellectually and sensorially.
