Legendary and unpredictable: the ICP Orchestra
The Instant Composers Pool (ICP) Orchestra has been a household name for decades. Founded in 1967 by drummer Han Bennink and pianist/composer Misha Mengelberg, this versatile ensemble remains one of the most creative groups in modern jazz. Although Mengelberg passed away in 2017, his compositions are kept vibrantly alive by the largely consistent line-up. His body of work forms the foundation, yet no ICP concert ever sounds the same.
Creative chaos and playful virtuosity in modern jazz
The musicians of the ICP Orchestra have mastered the art of embracing each other’s quirks—whether in timing or intonation. They challenge one another, disrupt expectations, and bend or subvert the music in the moment. Their performances are filled with surprises, unexpected turns, agile elegance, and sudden bursts of energy.
