Hans Dulfer: versatile sax legend
Hans Dulfer (86) is one of the most versatile musicians in the Netherlands.
As a teenager, he saw Kid Dynamite perform. The raw, driving sound that the Surinamese saxophonist conjured from his instrument would stay with Dulfer forever. It shaped him. Years later, he wrote the Kid Dynamite Suite, which he performed multiple times with the Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet and the Surinam Music Ensemble.
With his illustrious and forward-thinking formations such as Perikels, Reflud, and Big Boy, Hans grew into the most renowned saxophonist in the Netherlands. He also frequently performed with other artists such as Boy Edgar, John McLaughlin, Willem Breuker, Jan Akkerman, and Herman Brood.
From stage performer to international success
For many years, Dulfer was primarily a live performer, with recording and releasing albums taking second place. When he finally took this more seriously in the 1990s, major success followed in the Netherlands, along with even achieving star status in Japan.
Opening Red Light Jazz 2026 at Casa Rosso
On Friday afternoon, June 5, Hans Dulfer and his band will once again open the Red Light Jazz Festival, as tradition dictates, at the world-famous Casa Rosso Theater.
Regular visitors of Red Light Jazz know: if you want to see the still high-energy saxophonist perform at Casa Rosso, make sure to arrive early!
