Irene Reig
Irene Reig (Barcelona, 1993) was interested in music from an early age. She took piano lessons in various conservatories including the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona.
At the age of 11 Irene started playing the saxophone and when she was 15 Irene introduced jazz into her life. After several studies in Spain, she moved to the Netherlands to obtain her Master’s degree at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Ferdinand Povel as her senior teacher. There she had the opportunity to play with musicians such as Simon Rigter, Martijn van Iterson, Terell Staford and Rob van Bavel.
From 2008 to 2011, Irene played alto and baritone sax and clarinet with the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. With this band she recorded several CDs (Jazzing Live at Casa Fuster and Jazzsing vol. II). On the albums she played with Dick Oatts, Perico Sambeat, Jesse Davis, Scott Robinson as special guests.
Her first album as leader, Views (2017), was recorded in 2016 with a quintet which included trumpeter and flugelhorn player John Swana and comprised her own songs. It evokes memories of Barcelona, Amsterdam and Philadelphia, three cities where she has lived. Her next two albums were as leader of a septet called The Bop Collective: ‘The Bop Collective’ was released in 2018 and ‘Iapsis’ in 2019. Both albums present original songs and arrangements full of personality and freshness that confirm the band as a revelation on the national jazz scene.
During Red Light Jazz 2024, Irene will play every day in Café ZILT with her quartet.
