renaissance!<\/strong> What was once taken for granted is once again resonating through the historic heart of the city. During the upcoming <strong data-start=\"258\" data-end=\"305\">13th edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival<\/strong>, taking place from <strong data-start=\"325\" data-end=\"345\">June 5 to June 7<\/strong>, the neighborhood will come alive with spectacular performances. But those who look\u2014and listen\u2014closely will notice that jazz in the Red Light District has long since become more than just a festival phenomenon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a4b877 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a4b877\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"1085\">Over the past few years, a vibrant new jazz scene has quietly emerged in and around the Red Light District. From summer concerts at iconic venues such as the <strong data-start=\"716\" data-end=\"731\">Brokers Bar<\/strong> in the <strong data-start=\"739\" data-end=\"760\">Beurs van Berlage<\/strong> to late-night jam sessions in student caf\u00e9s and cultural meeting places, the area has once again become a breeding ground for improvisation, connection, and musical creativity. What first became visible during the festival has evolved into a thriving musical network that is becoming increasingly rooted in the neighborhood.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9fcbff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c9fcbff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1149\">Festival director <strong data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1122\">Marcel Kaatee<\/strong> confirms this development:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2a4fb7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2a4fb7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1149\">\u201cWhat we are seeing is that jazz no longer comes alive only during Red Light Jazz. It has become part of the everyday cultural life in and around the Red Light District. That is exactly what we envisioned when we launched the festival in 2014.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e8c063 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8e8c063\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1917\">The connection between jazz and Amsterdam\u2019s old city center runs deep. In the early twentieth century, dance halls along the <strong data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1535\">Zeedijk<\/strong> were already embracing jazz\u2014at the time a controversial new genre. In the post-war years, the Red Light District and the <strong data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1671\">Nieuwmarkt<\/strong> area became a melting pot of cultures, where Surinamese musicians, American soldiers, and Dutch artists met and performed together. Jazz legends such as <strong data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"1841\">Kid Dynamite<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"1859\">Teddy Cotton<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1865\" data-end=\"1878\">Rita Reys<\/strong> became inseparably linked to this era.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-16d5bf9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"16d5bf9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The rise of pop music in the 1960s and the spread of hard drugs in the 1970s led to the disappearance of many live jazz venues. Since 2010, however, the area has witnessed a remarkable revival. The relocation of the <strong data-start=\"2135\" data-end=\"2167\">Conservatorium van Amsterdam<\/strong> from Amsterdam South to the city center in 2008 undoubtedly contributed to this resurgence, with the Red Light District becoming a new home base for students to live, perform, and collaborate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5fc4282 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5fc4282\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Today, jazz is once again flourishing in the Wallen area, supported by a growing number of concert series, jam sessions, and venues that are repositioning Amsterdam\u2019s historic center as a vibrant jazz district. This revival is visible throughout the year.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e39fe34 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e39fe34\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"3047\">Alongside the <strong data-start=\"2633\" data-end=\"2660\">Red Light Jazz Festival<\/strong> and the jazz activities organized by the cultural platform <strong data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2748\">Red Light Arts &amp; Culture<\/strong> at the Brokers Bar and other neighborhood venues, the calendar of recurring jazz events continues to expand. Highlights include the <strong data-start=\"2881\" data-end=\"2915\">Sunday Afternoon Jazz Sessions<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"2919\" data-end=\"2932\">Caf\u00e9 ZILT<\/strong> (held every second Sunday of the month) and the weekly Sunday jam sessions at <strong data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3020\">\u2019Skek<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3025\" data-end=\"3046\">De Engelbewaarder<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50445e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"50445e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3441\">New venues are also helping to shape this development, including <strong data-start=\"3114\" data-end=\"3124\">Contra<\/strong>, a jazz restaurant housed in the former Amsterdam Academic Club, featuring live music from Wednesday through Sunday and late-night jam sessions. Other contributors include <strong data-start=\"3297\" data-end=\"3316\">Theater Mascini<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"3325\" data-end=\"3355\">Dutch Courage Cocktail Bar<\/strong>, where concerts, improvisation sessions, and crossover evenings regularly take place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b3df3a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b3df3a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3441\">Together, these initiatives have created a growing network of venues and sessions that once again positions the Red Light District as a true jazz neighborhood.
