Many special jazz talents study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. One of those talents is the originally Korean pianist Youngwoo Lee. He graduated and performed at the end of November with his quartet at the Bimhuis in the Rough Diamonds Around Midnight concert series.

Youngwoo Lee likes to experiment with his musical identity. He is interested in 20th-century harmonies and the work of composers such as Olivier Messiaen. Youngwoo Lee is also inspired by complex rhythmic ideas and electronic sounds of contemporary jazz and improvised music. The music is not as complicated as it looks though. With singable melodies Youngwoo Lee achieves the opposite!

The Youngwoo Lee quartet brings together three different nationalities. Although they met in the jazz department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the Korean, Portuguese and Dutch background of the members of the Yougwoo Lee quartet extends from classical music to gospel. The group combines acoustic instruments with electronics in which the harmonic sounds of composers such as Messiaen come together with contemporary jazz.
