Philip Harper (USA)

Trumpeter Philip Harper’s biography reads like a ‘who is who’ in jazz history. Already at the start of his career, Philip was hired by Art Blakey for the frontline of his famous Jazz Messengers. With his brother Winard (drums), he formed the Harper Brothers, and with this band they recorded six albums and played on festivals all over the world. Philip is a regular member of The Mingus Big Band for more than 20 years and still tours with them. Over the last couple of years, Philip played and recorded with Benny Golson, Louis Hayes and Cedar Walton, to name a few.

After living in Europe for a number of years Philip returned to his roots: New York. After being the ‘the perfect sideman’ of the big names in jazz, Philip is now also active as the leader of his own quintet.

His musical expressiveness and unique sound display a combination of talent and a deep love for jazz, as well as respect for his musical mentors and his experiences over the whole world. Philip Harper adds heart to the current virtuoso and fast New York jazzscene.

Dutch music journalist and biographer (of Chet Baker, Ben Webster) attended a concert of Philip and his Dutch band and wrote: ‘Everybody want to learn jazz, be jazzy and hip, but Philip Harper doesn’t need all that. His music is drenched with Miles, Dizzy, Satchmo, all the great ones, and has developed into a great player himself. Each solo of his is a jump into the unknown and a continuation of a rich tradition. I saw Philip and his fine band and was deeply impressed.’

The Heart of the Standard represents the repertoire that formed the musical identity of Philip Harper: the jazz-standards. Like no other, Philip Harper knows that these standards are timeless and he has the gift to discover new dimensions within each piece. With his sound that echoes the jazz tradition he reworks these pieces into a new experience, radiating with freshness, as if they were composed yesterday.
