Omer Klein Trio

“Hardly anyone can unify groove and romanticism as organically as Omer Klein.”

This quote refers to Sleepwalkers, the seventh album of the Israeli-born master pianist Omer Klein. It was released in 2017 and his debut for Warner Music. Klein, whose music has been called “borderless” (The New York Times) as well as “fluent and sensual” (Bavarian Broadcasting), recorded Sleepwalkers with his tried and trusted trio featuring Haggai Cohen-Milo on bass and Amir Bresler on drums. “In everything we play there is immense closeness. Our long friendship already has a sound. We have found our own way of thinking and doing things”, Klein says. “Amir and Haggai are not simply important collaborators on this album, they ARE this music as much as I am.

The thirteen original songs on Sleepwalkers, all of them composed by or at least with Klein, combine into a masterpiece of magnificence and profound originality – and impressively show the relevance and the beauty of the piano trio in Jazz today.

Omer Klein, born in Netanya, Israel, in 1982, began his Jazz studies as a teenager and his concert career at the age of 16. Barely 23, he moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory with Danilo Perez and then on to New York, where he soon became a student of Fred Hersch’s and a vital part of the scene, appearing everywhere from the Blue Note Jazz Club to Jazz at Lincoln Center. In New York Klein played with trumpeter Avishai Cohen and he released an album on Tzadik Records, the label of the American avant-garde composer, arranger, producer John Zorn.

Now being a Steinway artist and living in Düsseldorf, Germany, Klein won the “Förderpreis” given by the state of NRW in 2015. Recognized as “an international star” by Kultur Spiegel, he keeps busy as a pianist and composer with his critically acclaimed trio, touring the world throughout the year. His previous trio album Fearless Friday (2015) achieved great success and received an ECHO Jazz nomination. Klein is also teaching a yearly course at the Jerusalem Music Centre, in a special program initiated by pianist Murray Perahia.

After his concert in February at the Bimhuis Omer Klein returns to Amsterdam for a special performance with his trio on Sunday June 3rd at the Park Plaza Victoria Hotel during the 5th edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival.
