Fay Claassen

Fay Claassen has a great career in combining her performances in a lot of concerts with her own projects, as well as being invited as a guest soloist with many big band and symphonic orchestras, like the Metropole Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, The WDR Big Band, The North Netherland Symphonic Orchestra.

Fay made up herself with different styles in music, but never loses her own direction and sound in every project that she realizes. Her eight own albums were very successful. Important international guests were honored by Fay to be invited on her albums (Kenny Werner, Toots, Mike Stern, Barry Harris). She received many awards: the Edison and the only Golden Award which was granted in the Netherlands to a jazz-cd during the last 10 years (the double album Two Portraits of Chet Baker). All About Jazz USA proclaimed this album as Best Vocal Album of the Year.

In 2016 received with the outstanding Peter Beets Trio, the PREIS DER DEUTSCHEN SCHALLPLATTENKRITIK. With this combination she internationally will perform during 2017. After finishing the album SING! with the WDR Big Band in Germany some years ago, she was again invited last summer for a second project „The Dutch Songbook“.

In the American edition of The SCAT OMNIBOOK with written improvisations of 30 international singers you’ll find Fay Claassen’s Line For Lyons as the only European singer among Kurt Elling, Ella Fitzgerald, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan. A great highlight for Fay was when Bob Brookmeyer asked her for his last project with his THE NEW ART ORCHESTRA to sing 8 songs on his album STANDARDS.

In 2016 Fay performed for the 10th time at the North Sea Jazz Festival. That year with the magnificent Peter Beets Trio.

In 2018 it is 30 years ago that the American singer/trumpet player Chet Baker died in Amsterdam from a still mysterious cause by a fall from the window of his hotel room. His music is now more beloved than ever. In the TOBACCO Theater, Fay will pay a special tribute to Chet Baker on Saturday, June 2, as part of the Red Light Jazz Festival.

“Claassen replaces Baker’s trumpet, revealing her amazing skill at phrasing. It’s an eloquent study in counterpoint.” Jazz Times
