Knock on Wood is a new collaboration between vocalist/percussionist Sanne Huijbregts (EvenSanne) and drummer/percussionist Joost Lijbaart (Under the Surface, Yuri Honing). For this unusual lineup, they have dug deep into their musical toy box to unearth all manner of instruments and beautiful sonorities. Pitched percussion is key to the identity of the band, the sounds of vibraphone, marimba and glockenspiel form the basis above which the voice can take flight. Huijbregts’ songwriting and pop sensibility meets the freely improvised soundscapes and delicate grooves of Lijbaart. The result is a genre defying dreamscape of loops, lyricism and intimate compositions. Line Up

The band members found each other in the center of Amsterdam and had an immediate click. These world citizens with a broad view on music, leaning on the fundaments of jazz, are new on the list of participants at this year’s Red Light Jazz festival. This international ensemble has a very particular concept. During the night the band will be moving gradually from true jazz towards the tender heartbeats of Liv Sublime’s electronic set.

The vocalist of the group, Laura Sestri (1986) initially made her breakout debut in 2004 when she released her first album Magua that is characterized by symphonic rock. Since then, Laura has expanded her repertoire by performing in choirs, musical theater, on festivals, as well as in jazz- and rock bands. Meanwhile she was following (mainly private) vocal classes for 9 years. She had worked for the production team of Massive Music. As the vocalist of the group Artificial Happiness, Laura performed during the openings of exhibitions, at night clubs, underground parties, business dinners, fashion shows and at festivals like Dance Valley, Mysteryland, Tomorrowland (Belgium), Neu Am See, Beesenstedt and Art Lake (Germany).

She has also provided background vocals for Trijntje Oosterhuis and performed at Club Dauphine.

Laura, before returning to her homeland, spent the last six years in Israel. There she sang in the booming Israeli wedding industry and met Liv Sublime. This couple connected through their passion and their roads never parted ever since.

Liv Sublime (1978) spent her early childhood in Rehovot Israel. The vinyl that was played at home introduced her to classic music as well as reggae, rock, jazz and blues. It created a profound love for music. Liv Sublime, formerly known as Sublime / Anonymous Kaktoo, worked as a dj/producer at Moksha for 7 years. In 2002 her hit song 'Ano-Kaktoo' was a breakthrough that opened the doors to Europe and Asia. For years she toured these continents as a trance dj. For the past years she has build up a new oeuvre, with her own unique genre that originates in techno, electronica, deephouse and has traces of trance. She had been looking for the voice for her music until she found Laura.

Now Liv and Laura are being hired to perform at exclusive private events in Israel and Europe together. In Holland they perform at festivals such as SexyLand and also in Paradiso.

Although Laura’s voice has a somewhat angelic character it only gives it it’s own unique touch to the legendary classic jazz standards. Jazz and Electronic music combined brings out the best in both. To increase her skills in jazz Laura participated in many jazz jams throughout the city and connected with two other members of this group:

Guitarist Gianfranco Mascayano (1986) was born in Valparaiso / Chile and raised in Sweden. This gave him the opportunity to grow up surrounded by a sea of cultural and musical identities. Gian began playing Latin American music/classical guitar at early age and soon gravitated toward jazz and other improvised music. At age 15 Gian was accepted to the 3 year Jazz High school program at Vasaskolan/ Gävle, where graduated after 3 years of intense education from Sweden's finest jazz musicians and educators, with some of the most talented up and coming jazz musicians of Scandinavia. At this point Gian was still a serious break-dancer, which has strongly influenced his approach and taste for rhythm. After graduating high school Gian spent his teens playing and touring with Jazz, Funk, Latin, Hiphop, Reggae bands across Europe, while touring the world on some of the most prestigious Cruise Ships in the world. After intense touring and traveling and winning competitions such as "Universal Guitarist", Gian decided to finalize his Jazz guitar performance degree at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam. . Gian is currently based in Amsterdam leading his own jazz quartet and freelancing in various projects in a wide variety of genres and constellations"

Double bass player Hendrik Müller (1986) comes from Germany. He began his musical carrier at the age of 6 when he started classical piano lessons. At the age of 14 he began taking classical double bass lessons and joined the local Youth Orchestra and the local youth Big Band. Still the piano was considered as his main instrument until the age of 20. During his stay as an exchange student in the USA in 2003/04 he discovered his fascination for jazz.

In 2010 Hendrik began to study jazz double-bass and electric-bass at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. In 2016 he finished his master in music at the conservatory of Amsterdam. Now he is an active part of the Amsterdam jazz scene.

Through a workshop by Floor van Zutphen, Nicoline followed singing lessons by Astrid Seriese for a number of years. In that period she came into contact with Peggy Larson and sang 4 years in Peggy's Angels. Nicoline also founded an a-cappella group: Christmas Angels. “Je Veux L’amour!”

On Friday, June 1, in the Casa Rosso Theater, singer and entertainer Ellen ten Damme will perform part of her well-known show PARIS – BERLIN. From Paris to Berlin, via Amsterdam and back, but small and intimately, accompanied by pianist Jochem Braat.

Ellen brings a musical ode to the chansonniers and top entertainers of the last century, such as Edith Piaf, Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill, but also to jazz from the 40s and 50s and the music of today.

In the half century that she has been walking around, Ellen experienced a lot, amorous adventures or not. Yet she cheerfully asks herself: "Can I do something about it, that everything goes to hell? No!”

Therefore: let's dance and sing, love and celebrate life. Now!

Saskia Laroo’s Jazzkia feat. Warren Byrd

Saskia Laroo 1959 was hailed by American public and press at large as “Lady Miles of Europe”.

She is one of the few women trumpet stylists and a delight on the music scene for almost four decades. Born July 31, 1959 in Amsterdam, it began for her on trumpet at age 8, never dreaming herself becoming a professional musician. That all changed when Saskia, turned 18, after briefly majoring in Mathematics at University of Amsterdam switched her focus to a career in music.

She worked extensively in various groups from this point, primarily on upright bass, though eventually, on both bass and trumpet. Saskia Laroo combines today’s music by uncontrived romps into new styles, eagerly limned as “nu jazz” or “swingin’ body-music”–a vivacious blend of hip-hop, jazz, salsa, funk reggae, and world, that a select few others would dare venture. Her artistry and her groove ring vibrantly and free on her seven CD albums and a DVD, journeying us through all the music she has absorbed, played with heart and soul.

Saskia performs throughout the whole world, mainly her own compositions and primarily her own formations—consisting of two to eight musicians—occasionally in combination with local artists, and as special guest soloist. One of her formations is “Duo Laroo/Byrd”, a duo with the American pianist/vocalist and composer Warren Byrd, who also performs with her other bands “The Saskia Laroo Band” (funky jazz) and “Jazzkia” (pure acoustic jazz).

In recent years, Saskia and her various formations have performed in countries such as South Korea, India, China, the United States, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Zimbabwe and several other European countries. Of course Saskia can be regularly heard on Dutch stages and keeps faithful to her birth city Amsterdam by performing there as often as possible and with much joy. Jazz cafe Casablanca was for years her monthly “gig” with events such as the release party of her CD “Jazzkia”. Now she is very happy to return to Casablanca for a concert on June 1 with her jazz quartet ”Jazzkia” featuring Warren Byrd. The next day she will be performing at the Cotton Club.

The name The Red Boot Quartet refers to the first Red Light Jazz performance in 2015 of this now famous occasion formation in Café De Roode Laars on the Zeedijk. The undisputed leader of the quartet is the born Amsterdammer Ronald Jansen Heijtmajer (1947).

Ronald studied clarinet and saxophone at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in the seventies and released the Fingerbustin album for the VPRO / BASTA label. As a member of the Dutch Orchestra, Ronald can be heard on various CD’s that BASTA has released over the years. Ronald played at many festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival. Ronald continued to play after reaching his retirement age. He still likes performing, especially playing at the Red Light Jazz Festival in the heart of Amsterdam.

Besides Ronald, the one-armed trumpeter Menno Daams (1961) is a striking appearance in the jazz quartet. Like Ronald, Menno is also ‘Amsterdammer’ in heart and soul. Before he lost his right arm at the age of 12, Menno played guitar. While he was trained at a young age by Freddy Grin - at the time solo cornet of the Concertgebouw Orchestra - Menno started playing jazz with friends in the style of his great example Louis Armstrong. At 16 he could already arrange. In 1987 Menno was admitted to the Sweelinck Conservatory where he studied jazz trumpet under the direction of Charles Green. In 1988 Menno graduated cum laude from the University of Amsterdam as a historian specialized in Ancient History.

From 1992 to 2000, Menno was a trumpet player and arranger of The Beau Hunks, a jazz group that also gained fame outside the country's borders. From 1996 to 2003 Menno played in The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw for which he wrote arrangements. Menno also arranged for the Metropole Orkest and the Dutch Swing College Band. In recent years, Menno played with Jake Hanna, Scott Hamilton, Lee Konitz, Toots Thielemans, Monty Alexander and many others.

From 2008 to 2015, Menno was a lecturer at the Conservatory in Amsterdam and a guest lecturer at other conservatoires. Menno currently gives private lessons and is involved in the annual 'Classic Jazz Workshop' in Ascona Switzerland. In addition to performing with The Red Boot Quartet every now and then, Menno has his own jazz quartet: The Unaccounted Four.

The other two members of The Red Boot Quartet are guitarist Rolf Koppijn and bass player Rob Veenhuizen. Rolf learned to play guitar from his father who was part of the Quintet of the Dutch Jazzliga before the war. At Red Light Jazz, Rolf plays a very special National tenor guitar from 1931. And pay attention to Rob’s extra (fifth) string on his double bass so he can keep playing his swinging runs effortlessly to great heights.

The Advertisers play a mix of jazz, funk, blues, rock and latin; within the repertoire and even within the individual pieces. In short: fusion in the true sense of the word. Instrumental pieces are alternated with pieces with vocals and there is a lot of room for improvisation. Sophisticated interplay in combination with individual highlights.

Guitarist Mick Heine grew up with the pop music of the sixties and the jazz rock of the seventies. This resulted in Mick’s participation in a lot of funk, soul and rock bands. However, there always was the wish to be the guitar player in a jazz trio with bass and drums.

As a young teenager Philippe van Haren Noman sat down behind a drum kit and there was an immediate click. It was his start as a drummer and the love never went away. At the age of sixteen he played in his first band. Inspired by the big jazz rock bands from the seventies, he was involved in a jazz rock formation in his later teen years. During this early period Philippe also did a lot of sessions with a lot of musicians from the Amsterdam music scene. At a later age he played in the bands Roberto Q and the Boppers and Fur. Also he did a short tour in the backing band of blues harp virtuoso Magic Dick (The J. Geils Band). Furthermore Philippe gave several live drum solos for the Amsterdam tv program ‘Hoeksteen Live'. He released two CDs: in 1997 the solo drum cd ‘PHILIPPE’ and in 2004 the CD 'A WEEKEND IN OCTOBER' from PHILIPPE, a six member fusion formation. Just like guitarist Mick Heine, he wanted a trio with guitar, bass and drums. And so it happened; The Advertisers were founded in 2015.

Cees van der Laarse plays bass and jazz from age fourteen. He is self-taught and has played with the most diverse musicians and bands such as Dave Mason (Traffic), folk jazz band Sail, jazz trumpet player Eddie Gale and flautist Wallace Shorts. His first band as a professional was Raoul Burnett's latin jazz band Sight. He became well known after he joined the Jan Akkerman Band; they toured throughout Europe with as highlight the Montreux Jazz Festival. As a member of the Paradiso Houseband he played with Chip Taylor en Emmylou Harris. In the field of jazz and blues he performed with Rob Franken, Harry Muskee, Hans Dulfer, Joachim Kühn, Jasper van 't Hof, Didier Lockwood*, Bob Malach, Angelique Kidjo, Neppy Noya, Eef Albers and Brainbox. MAARIS is an amazing band from Groningen that will ignite your senses. The band is made up of young musicians who share a passion for blues and rock. Blues in the broadest sense of the word: don't expect any traditional jazz or standard 12/8 riffs from this bunch! The band was able to develop their distinct sound in a relatively short period of time, which led to the release of the EP 'Time' in October 2017 (a live recording in 432 Hertz), which was well received.

David Berkman has been an essential part of the New York jazz scene for over 30 years, as a creative and swinging voice on the piano and as a gifted composer and arranger.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he currently divides his time between teaching in N.Y. and performing with world renowned jazz artists at home and abroad. Berkman has performed extensively with (and/or recorded and/or composed and arranged for) numerous jazz luminaries including: Sonny Stitt, Tom Harrell, Brian Blade, the Vanguard Orchestra, Cecil McBee, Ray Drummond, Dave Douglas, Chris Potter, Chris Cheek, Steve Wilson, Victor Lewis, Dayna Stephens, Linda Oh and Dick Oatts.

Berkman’s 8 recordings as a leader have appeared on numerous “Critic’s Best” lists. David Berkman is director of Jazz Studies and an Associate Professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, C.U.N.Y. in New York and has published 3 books on jazz with Sher Music Publishing (“The Jazz Musician’s Guide to Creative Practicing”, “The Jazz Singer’s Guidebook”, and the “The Jazz Harmony Book”) which are used in universities worldwide. He has taught and performed at workshops and artist residencies at scores of schools and programs around the U.S., Canada, Europe and the U.K., South America, Asia and the Mideast.

Bassist Joris Teepe (1962) is the first jazz musician from The Netherlands to be able to make it in New York.

Arriving in New York in 1992 with just his bass and a suitcase, he took lessons with Ron Carter, quickly met many musicians and started to work a lot. A year later he recorded his first CD, with a band co-led by Don Braden and featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Carl Allen and Tom Harrell. From that point everything really took off for Joris and he became a bassist in great demand. He has been working with the “who-is-who in Jazz”, such as Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune, Rashied Ali, Billy Hart and Randy Brecker.

Currently Joris has recorded 10 albums as a leader. He also established himself as a composer, record producer (many different labels and artists), educator (director of Jazz Studies at the Hanze University, Bass Professor at Queens College, NY) and bandleader.

In 2004 Joris Teepe has been nominated for the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the category “Artist deserving wider recognition”.

“..Joris Teepe has become musical partners with some of the best musicians in New York. This is due to his status as a bassist who possesses a warm, even tone, and a sympathic, swinging beat (..) but also to his abilities as a writer, arranger, and band leader.” – Peter Washington, New York

The Triplicats are distinguishing from other acoustic trios by their originality, quality and multi-instrumentality. Not only Dewi, but also Diederick can take the lead vocals. Because Sebas plays the guitar, double bass and sings alongside, the trio can be very varied.

Old jazz and easy listening is interspersed with hits from today, in a 'vintage' version. With their swing vintage music, pristine three-part voices and the perfect look, The Triplicats are a joy to eyes and ears.

After four successful performances last year, American singer Lucy Woodward returns to the Netherlands for a concert at the Red Light Jazz Festival, at the Bulldog Hotel. The concert of Lucy and her Dutch band will highlight her latest album Til They Bang On The Door (GroundUP / Verve /Universal). She will also perform her older work at the Bulldog Hotel.

Lucy Woodward was born in London and spent her early childhood in Amsterdam. Then she moved to the U.S. and grew up in New York with her mother and spent the summers in Soest with her father. As a daughter of two classically trained musicians, it is obvious that Woodward understands music. She just finished school when Lucy starts singing jazz songs in restaurants in New York. She performs with cover bands and writes songs for others. Atlantic Records is impressed by Woodward and releases her debut-album While You Can in 2003. The single Dumb Girls lands in the Top 40 and her composition (There's Gotta Be) More To Life, performed by Stacie Orrico, reaches the Top 5.

To provide for her maintenance, Lucy sings numerous film soundtracks and TV commercials. Meanwhile, she continues writing songs and performing with her own band. The following album of Lucy is titled Lucy Woodward is ... Hot and Bothered (2008) and was produced by Itaal Shur (Santana, Maxwell) and Tim K (Tiny Hearts). The album shows the jazzy side of Lucy. Her next album Hooked! appears two years later on the jazz label Verve. Both albums, in which Lucy reverts to her musical roots in New York City, accelerate her career.

In 2011 Lucy gets in touch with Michael League, the frontman of the New York based jazz and fusion group Snarky Puppy with whom she records songs and goes on tour. Lucy contributes to two tracks on the Grammy award-winning Snarky Puppy album Family Dinner, Vol. 1, including the track Too Hot To Last.

In 2016 Lucy’s fourth solo album Til They Bang On The Door came out. It’s an all-star production featuring Snarky Puppy members Cory Henry and League himself, plus keyboardist /producer Henry Hey (David Bowie, Forq). In addition to her solo career, Woodward worked with big names such as Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan, Pink Martini, Celine Dion, Nikka Costa, Carole King and Joe Cocker. Her songs and voice were heard in feature films such as What a Girl Wants, The Blind Side, Music and Lyrics and Ice Princess.

Laura Sestri trio & DJ Liv sublime

<div class="eventpoploc"><a href="http://redlightjazz.com/en/locations/cafe-del-mondo/">Café Del Mondo</a></div><div class="eventdatum">Saturday June 2</div><div class="eventpoptijd">20:00</div>

FREE ADMISSION

The two sisters Beatrice and Vera van der Poel will perform on Saturday, June 2, at the historic Café In 't Aepjen, located on the Zeedijk in one of the two remaining wooden buildings in Amsterdam. They sing repertoire from ABBA but in jazz arrangements. In other words: Frida and Agneta go jazz!

Vera released her second solo album last year, made a furore with the TripHop-band Mimezine, played with the Nits and with VOER at the North Sea Jazz festival.

Beatrice made several albums and performed in theater with her Dutch repertoire. As her alter ego Miss Bee she played at the first edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival at Casa Rosso. She also performed during the Parade and at the North Sea Jazz festival. Together with Bob Fosko she spattered for years with Corrie van Binsbergen's Grote Brokken.

Nicoline Snaas grew up with music. Her parents had a record store, her mother got singing lessons at home every week and her brothers had a band with whom she often sang. They learned from each other.

Nicoline had piano and violin lessons at a young age. Classically in the first instance. Later she taught herself to play the guitar and made her own songs. She sang on several talent shows, took singing lessons with Tom de Graaf in Schagen. Nicoline sang in different formations: Clean and Cozy (close harmony), Double Touch (pop), Off limits (a-capella) and Scarabee (a-cappella).

With Walter Bertram she started the Nicoline Snaas Jazz Combo. The combo is still active.

He inspired amongst others Nirvana, Frank Sinatra, Van Morrison and Elvis and he’s the man behind prime hits like ‘Black Betty’, ‘Midnight Special’ and ‘Goodnight Irene’.

Dulfer tackles Lead Belly’s repertoire with free spirit and uncompromising energy, supported by a.o. guitar hero Jerome Hol, drummer extraordinaire Cyril Directie and baritonesax player and narrator Koen Schouten, peppered with juicy stories.

The unyielding sax sound of Dulfer is a force of nature, just like Lead Belly’s voice. Dulfer Plays Blues like no one but Dulfer can.

Chet Baker, The Last Days is a Dutch documentary on Chet Baker's final days in Amsterdam. It’s a fascinating and highly informative film made in 1990 by the recently commissioned director Willem Ouwerkerk on behalf of de ‘Wereldomroep’. Many insiders were interviewed such as jazz pianist Russ Freeman, Wim Wigt (record boss), Evert Hekkema (trumpet player), Belgian guitarist Philip Cathérine and Jacques Pelzer, "the pharmacy saxophonist from Liege (Belgium)". “Chet Baker, The Last Days is perhaps the most accurate and honest look at the life, career and The Last Days of Chet Baker. There is some very rare footage and a balanced look into Baker's playing.”

Gideon Tazelaar (1997) is a saxophonist residing in New York where he studies at the Juilliard School. Gideon grew up in the Netherlands and started playing the saxophone when he was seven years old. Within one year he made his national TV debut performing in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. From the age of 11 he started to play professionally and played at the North Sea Jazz Festival almost every year, among others, with his own quartet. At 14 he was admitted to the Bachelor's degree program at the Conservatory of Amsterdam which he finished summa cum laude at the age of 18. Next to being acknowledged as a mature bandleader, he performed throughout many countries in Europe, in Russia and in the U.S.A. as a sideman with dr. Lonnie Smith's sextet, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, New Cool Collective, Dick Oatts, Eric Alexander, Johnathan Kreisberg, Benjamin Herman, Ruud Jacobs, Ferdinand Povel, John Engels etc.

Ben van Gelder (1988) is an authority on the alto saxophone and a composer with a contemporary view. His music is rooted in tradition but is distinguished by a unique blend of “lyricism, energy, grace and rhythm.” His albums ‘Frame of Reference’ and ‘Reprise’ garnered outstanding reviews in the Dutch and international press. The album 'Reprise’ was named ‘best jazz album of the year’ by de Volkskrant. Van Gelder has won various awards, such as the Deloitte Jazz Award and the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown fellowship, and more recently a composition assignment from the Jazz Gallery in New York. He has collaborated with outstanding musicians such as Mark Turner, AmbroseAkinmusire and Aaron Parks. His latest outing ‘Among Verticals’, a record inspired by the painting of Frantisek Kupka, received 5-star reviews in Dutch newspapers NRC and Volkskrant. Ben van Gelder is on faculty at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam jazz quartet Uncharted Land consists of Terra Lasès (tenor saxophone, vocals), Daniel Hooglandt (piano), Yuri Heiligers (double bass) and Leon Yegenoglu (drums). These young and talented members of the group have been playing in this formation for a year and a half.

They know each other from the different big bands of the recently deceased jazz legend Peter (“Jazz is fun, but serious fun”) Guidi. There the foundation was laid for their love of jazz. It brought them to numerous important jazz venues at home and abroad. For example, with the Junior Jazz Unlimited Big Band, they did various gigs in New York, where they attended a workshop in the famous Lincoln Center.

Despite their relatively short existence, Uncharted Land sounds like a matter of course. It sparkles, swings and radiates great vitality. Their playing is sometimes exuberant, at other times modest, but always creative in improvisations. The repertoire includes - in addition to standards - pieces by contemporary jazz composers. Since the foundation, the quartet has been coached by bassist Peter Bjornild, teacher at the Jazz Academy.

The K-Street Jazz band is arguably one of the more youthful bands playing traditional New Orleans style street jazz in Europe today. In fact, it's pretty fair to say that in a scene dominated by old jazz cats ... we pride ourselves on still looking like a bunch of kittens!

Mind you, those late twenties can be deceptive because the band is part of a much wider and older jazz tradition.

The southwestern part of the Netherlands has a unique culture when it comes to street jazz, with the internationally renowned Breda Jazz Festival at its epicenter.

The nearby town of Bergen op Zoom has an especially dense spread of jazz bands, demonstrated by the 2015 documentary 'New Orleans on the Scheldt', which by chance also happened to immortalize our band ... for posterity.

If there's anything this band tries to prove in every performance it gives, it's that traditional jazz is anything but a dusty phonograph record playing softly in some elderly mans attic. It's music that's meant to be played live, in the streets!

Formed in 2012, the band has since become a regular at many traditional jazz festivals in the Netherlands and in more recent years has steadily been performing at (and returning to) a number of international venues, including the Celler Jazztage in Germany and prestigious River Boat Jazz Festival in Denmark.

For us, a performance abroad is not about making a profit ... it's about meeting new people and sharing a love for this particular brand of jazz.

Recognised by the prestigious online magazine Latin Jazz Network as ‘a shape-shifting musician and instrumentalist’, Michael Simon has developed into a protean trumpeter, composer, arranger and interpreter of international prominence and significance.

The realization that music is a universal language that connects and unites people regardless of their race, background and culture, has led Michael to explore Asian music and incorporate those elements in his current realm of work. When Latin rhythms are fused into Asian melodies, colored by jazz sounds and harmonies, Michael realizes that the music he created, particularly his most recent works, frequently goes in surprising directions and transcends the music genres in the present time. That is widely evident in his latest release ‘Destiny’s Will’.

On his newest project ‘Asian Connection’, Michael teams up with saxophonist Terry Hsieh, one of the most active saxophonist in Taiwan, and is backed up by a strong Malaysian rhythm section comprising of Michael Veerapen on piano, Daniel Foong on bass and John Thomas on drums. Further, the presence of Chung Yufeng on the Pipa will add a flare of spice to the already colorful palette “Asian Connection’ and is set to lead the band into uncharted musical waters.”

19.00u – 21.00 uur: Wouter Hamel

As a singer, artist and musician, Wouter Hamel has been active for more than ten years. With his debut album Hamel (2007) Wouter became well known as troubadour and jazz vocalist in the Netherlands, Germany, Japan and Korea.

The fifth album AMAURY (2017) was released ten years later and is Hamel's most versatile album to date. At AMAURY Wouter worked with producer Andy Platts from the band Mamas Gun. On the album simplicity is mixed with addictive grooves and melodies, starting as a smooth Stray Cat in the heart of Tokyo and ending in the small melancholic hours with When All The Bars Have Closed Again. AMAURY is a record on which Hamel bears his naivety, courage and optimism as an armor. No obstacle too big for him: Wouter Hamel has been around the block.

Gare du Nord sold 500,000 albums and received triple platinum in 2014 for the albums Sex 'n' Jazz (2007) and Love For Lunch (2009). 23.00u – 01.00 uur: DJ Maestro

Martijn Barkhuis a.k.a. DJ Maestro (1970) clearly knows the meaning of great sounds. He embraces an enormous variety of styles: a quick look into his massive music collection and you’ll find John Coltrane next to Cerrone, Nina Simone next to Fela Kuti, or, even better, Masters at Work next to Chet Baker. Hear him spin and you’ll understand why he is called DJ Maestro.

Martijn has a broad musical background. Raised in a musical family, he started playing the violin at an early age. After working successfully with different orchestras during his youth, his parents encouraged him to keep playing. But while studying Musicology at the University of Utrecht, Martijn developed new passions: jazz and radio. This saw him trading his violin for a job at national Jazz Radio.

Meanwhile, he discovered the party scene and fell in love once again: in love with the beats, in love with the life style, in love with the late nights and early mornings. Through never-ending support of one of Holland’s biggest deejays, Eddy de Clercq, Martijn soon stood in front of major crowds in Amsterdam-based clubs such as Roxy, Escape and Paradiso.

His love for classical, jazz and club music resulted in the crazy yet amazing musical phenomenon of DJ Maestro.

Maestro released 9 platinum-award albums for Blue Note records, 2 albums for Verve/Universal, played all 5 continents, just signed at Bethlehem Records, got his house in order and became a father. The only thing that didn’t change was his love for JAZZ.

Since 2016 Swiss drummer Enea Besana is based in Amsterdam, where he formed his own band with international musicians: Karolis Sarkus (LT) on Tenor and Soprano saxophones, Santiago Von Sternenfels (MEX) on Alto saxophone and Flute, Aron Gunst (UNG) on piano, Gediminas Stepanavicius (LT) on double bass and himself on drums.

The music could be defined as some sort of modern jazz with various influences such as folk, rock, blues and soul. The repertoire is uniquely made up of Enea's original compositions, inspired by the music he grew up with. The music the Enea Besana Band plays was born like this: listening back to nostalgic tapes from his childhood (which are also sampled into the music), and looking at old photo albums from his early years of life, Enea got inspired to write music that springs from his roots, and speaks his own history. Like this, the music Enea plays today with his band was born.

Fay Claassen

FREE ADMISSION

Fay Claassen has a great career in combining her performances in a lot of concerts with her own projects, as well as being invited as a guest soloist with many big band and symphonic orchestras, like the Metropole Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, The WDR Big Band, The North Netherland Symphonic Orchestra.

Fay made up herself with different styles in music, but never loses her own direction and sound in every project that she realizes. Her eight own albums were very successful. Important international guests were honored by Fay to be invited on her albums (Kenny Werner, Toots, Mike Stern, Barry Harris). She received many awards: the Edison and the only Golden Award which was granted in the Netherlands to a jazz-cd during the last 10 years (the double album Two Portraits of Chet Baker). All About Jazz USA proclaimed this album as Best Vocal Album of the Year.

In 2016 received with the outstanding Peter Beets Trio, the PREIS DER DEUTSCHEN SCHALLPLATTENKRITIK. With this combination she internationally will perform during 2017. After finishing the album SING! with the WDR Big Band in Germany some years ago, she was again invited last summer for a second project „The Dutch Songbook“.

In the American edition of The SCAT OMNIBOOK with written improvisations of 30 international singers you’ll find Fay Claassen’s Line For Lyons as the only European singer among Kurt Elling, Ella Fitzgerald, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan. A great highlight for Fay was when Bob Brookmeyer asked her for his last project with his THE NEW ART ORCHESTRA to sing 8 songs on his album STANDARDS.

In 2016 Fay performed for the 10th time at the North Sea Jazz Festival. That year with the magnificent Peter Beets Trio.

In 2018 it is 30 years ago that the American singer/trumpet player Chet Baker died in Amsterdam from a still mysterious cause by a fall from the window of his hotel room. His music is now more beloved than ever. In the TOBACCO Theater, Fay will pay a special tribute to Chet Baker on Saturday, June 2, as part of the Red Light Jazz Festival.

“Claassen replaces Baker’s trumpet, revealing her amazing skill at phrasing. It’s an eloquent study in counterpoint.” Jazz Times

Patrick Manzecchi

Patrick Manzecchi was born in Paris in 1969. He is the son of Franco Manzecchi, one of Europe’s most in-demand drummers of his generation. Franco tragically died in 1979 after moving from Paris to Konstanz (D) with his family. „The loss of my beloved daddy drove me to Jazz, I immediately was attracted to the music, and not necessarily to the drums at first“, says Patrick in an interview. “Jazz was and is my solace, my sanctuary“.

At the age of 10 Patrick started to play daddy’s drums, just for fun. Soon he tried to copy the drummers he listened to. It was not only drummers like his father Franco Manzecchi, Max Roach, Art Blakey and Kenny Clarke, that inspired Patrick, but even more the musical universe itself. Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie were his first heroes. A bit later, when he was thirteen, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis joined in. But there’s no great music without great drummers.

After graduating school Patrick begins studying languages (italian/french) and quits. He finally opts entirely for Music. He was freelancing for quite some time when former Duke Ellington-bassist Jimmy Woode recognized his talent and named him “King of Schlagzeugwerk“. Pianist Barry Harris (Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderley) added the confirmation: “You really know the stuff…“ after a one week stint together in 1999. The same year Patrick started to work with another mentor, legend Richie Beirach who calls him “the most talented drummer in Germany“. This motivated Patrick to go ahead and finally becomes a complete and professional drummer. He visits the drum school “Drummer’s Focus” in Stuttgart to learn how to read music. Patrick never stopped to grow musically ever since and encountered new challenges, from Rock to Jazz and Funk.

Patrick Manzecchi has worked and toured with Sheila Jordan, Paolo Fresu, Richie Beirach & George Mraz, Barry Harris, Scott Hamilton, Teddy Edwards, Arthur Blythe, Pee Wee Ellis & Fred Wesley, Rose Ann Dimalanda a.k.a “RAD“, Dick Oatts, Gary Smulyan, Mark Soskin, David Friedman, Gregoire Maret, Pierre Favre, Jimmy Woode, Reggie Johnson, Vince Benedetti, Harvie Swartz, Tim Hagans, Allan Praskin, Dusko Goykovich, Arkady Shilkloper, Sebastian Studnitzky, Gary Barone, Peter Madsen, Sandy Patton, Lisa Bassenge, Torsten de Winkel, Joo Kraus, Steffen Schorn, Gregor Huebner, Bernd Konrad and the list goes on.

Patrick also played with renowned German, Swiss, French, Italian, Austrian and Czech musicians in clubs and at festivals and on more than 40 CDs, next to countless radio- and TV broadcasts, as well as music for dance productions, theatre and film. Patrick has recorded 4 solo-albums and runs his own concert series “Jazz im Kulturzentrum” in Konstanz since 2007. Besides that he teaches in Konstanz, in Überlingen and in Kreuzlingen (Switzerland).

Thomas Winther Andersen

Bass player Thomas Winther Andersen was born in Oslo, Norway. He toured extensively in Europe and the USA with different musicians and bands, like Lee KonitzSheila Jordan, Jasper Blom, Robert Rook, Michiel Borstlap.

Thomas graduated from Amsterdam Conservatory in 1993 and supplemented with a master at the Conservatory of The Hague in 1994. In 1995 he received a grant from the Fonds Podiumkunsten to continue his studies in New York under guidance of Sal Mosca. Thomas has composed numerous pieces for various jazz ensembles, music for large ensemble and at the same time composed chamber music.

His compositions were recorded for the Norwegian and Dutch radio and many of them are released on CD, like his solo album Too Much Bass? (2002), as band leader: Line Up (1998) and Out From A Cool Storage (2004) with the group “Line Up”, Sketch (1999) with the group “Sketch”, Hymn For Fall (2006) with  the Robert Rook Trio, Patchwork (2010) and Spinnaker (2012) with his band “Winther-Storm”.

Laura Sestri trio & DJ Liv sublime

<div class="eventpoploc"><a href="http://redlightjazz.com/en/locations/cafe-del-mondo/">Café Del Mondo</a></div><div class="eventdatum">Sunday June 3</div><div class="eventpoptijd">20:00</div>

FREE ADMISSION

“Hardly anyone can unify groove and romanticism as organically as Omer Klein.”
(Piano News)

This quote refers to Sleepwalkers, the seventh album of the Israeli-born master pianist Omer Klein. It was released in 2017 and his debut for Warner Music. Klein, whose music has been called “borderless” (The New York Times) as well as “fluent and sensual” (Bavarian Broadcasting), recorded Sleepwalkers with his tried and trusted trio featuring Haggai Cohen-Milo on bass and Amir Bresler on drums. “In everything we play there is immense closeness. Our long friendship already has a sound. We have found our own way of thinking and doing things”, Klein says. “Amir and Haggai are not simply important collaborators on this album, they ARE this music as much as I am.

The thirteen original songs on Sleepwalkers, all of them composed by or at least with Klein, combine into a masterpiece of magnificence and profound originality – and impressively show the relevance and the beauty of the piano trio in Jazz today.

Omer Klein, born in Netanya, Israel, in 1982, began his Jazz studies as a teenager and his concert career at the age of 16. Barely 23, he moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory with Danilo Perez and then on to New York, where he soon became a student of Fred Hersch’s and a vital part of the scene, appearing everywhere from the Blue Note Jazz Club to Jazz at Lincoln Center. In New York Klein played with trumpeter Avishai Cohen and he released an album on Tzadik Records, the label of the American avant-garde composer, arranger, producer John Zorn.

Now being a Steinway artist and living in Düsseldorf, Germany, Klein won the “Förderpreis” given by the state of NRW in 2015. Recognized as "an international star" by Kultur Spiegel, he keeps busy as a pianist and composer with his critically acclaimed trio, touring the world throughout the year. His previous trio album Fearless Friday (2015) achieved great success and received an ECHO Jazz nomination. Klein is also teaching a yearly course at the Jerusalem Music Centre, in a special program initiated by pianist Murray Perahia.

After his concert in February at the Bimhuis Omer Klein returns to Amsterdam for a special performance with his trio on Sunday June 3rd at the Park Plaza Victoria Hotel during the 5th edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival.

Ornette Coleman once said: ‘The evolution observed in music is almost a biological fact, comparable to the slow transition from childhood into adulthood. Do you know but one great jazz musician who historically seen isn’t an apprentice?’ The mark of all great musicians in jazz history is their sense of tradition and progress. Stagnation is the death of jazz, and who would want dead music?

Guitarist Reinier Voet sees his role in gypsy jazz in the same perspective. He doesn’t hide the fact that he is a great admirer of Django Reinhardt, but the founder ofthe genre has been dead for over halfa century. And ifhe would have been alive today, he definitely wouldn’t have stopped at the music he had been making in either 1937, 1947 or 1953. He was a restless seeker for new directions on the road he had been taking. Reinier Voet has taken over from him, and has incorporated all of his knowledge of and love for jazz of the intermediate decades, as well as his European roots, into the music of his band Pigalle44.

The starting point for Voet and his comrades (rhythm guitarist Jan Brouwer and bassist Jet Stevens) is the power of expression of a strong melody or a carefully constructed improvisation. One well-placed note can say more than endless strings of notes without a head or a tail. Music needs to communicate, to convey passion and emotion, tell a clear and exciting story. And that is what Pigalle44 is all about. You can hear it in the catchy compositions the leader writes himself, but also in the band’s highly individual interpretations of (lesser known) standards and highlights from the jazz repertoire.

Trumpeter Philip Harper’s biography reads like a ‘who is who’ in jazz history. Already at the start of his career, Philip was hired by Art Blakey for the frontline of his famous Jazz Messengers. With his brother Winard (drums), he formed the Harper Brothers, and with this band they recorded six albums and played on festivals all over the world. Philip is a regular member of The Mingus Big Band for more than 20 years and still tours with them. Over the last couple of years, Philip played and recorded with Benny Golson, Louis Hayes and Cedar Walton, to name a few.

After living in Europe for a number of years Philip returned to his roots: New York. After being the ‘the perfect sideman’ of the big names in jazz, Philip is now also active as the leader of his own quintet.

His musical expressiveness and unique sound display a combination of talent and a deep love for jazz, as well as respect for his musical mentors and his experiences over the whole world. Philip Harper adds heart to the current virtuoso and fast New York jazzscene.

Dutch music journalist and biographer (of Chet Baker, Ben Webster) attended a concert of Philip and his Dutch band and wrote: ‘Everybody want to learn jazz, be jazzy and hip, but Philip Harper doesn’t need all that. His music is drenched with Miles, Dizzy, Satchmo, all the great ones, and has developed into a great player himself. Each solo of his is a jump into the unknown and a continuation of a rich tradition. I saw Philip and his fine band and was deeply impressed.’

The Heart of the Standard represents the repertoire that formed the musical identity of Philip Harper: the jazz-standards. Like no other, Philip Harper knows that these standards are timeless and he has the gift to discover new dimensions within each piece. With his sound that echoes the jazz tradition he reworks these pieces into a new experience, radiating with freshness, as if they were composed yesterday.
